I also confess that I don't understand the tweet in the OP. Does that mean that baseball players, for instance, and other sports that operate on the partial scholarship system will now be, in effect, fully funding their athletes?
Also, does it mean the schools HAVE to pay them, and do they have to pay them the same amount.
What happens if a school decides they don't want to pay athletes? Does the NCAA kick them out?

Even then, the schools have to get that money from somewhere.

These guys aren't allowed to have part time jobs like some of us
bullshite. I played football in college and worked 80 hours a week in the summer and part time in the winter/spring.

True but the difference between giving everybody a few extra grand in spending money and having to effectively give everybody full rides is significant.
Which brings to mind something I've kind of wondered. As I understand it, when an athlete gets a scholarship, it's not like the school puts a zero next to his balance; the athletic department has to write a check for the cost of attendance. If I am reading that correctly, why don't schools simply not accept a check from the AD, simply zero out the athlete's balance like he received the President's Scholarship (or whatever each school calls it) and have the AD use that saved money to "pay" the student.

The players are going to blow this money on stupid shite, then complain that their "pay" (and scholarships) aren't enough.
I can confirm this is true. All my teammates on scholarship wasted their off campus checks on stupid shite. When we would get stipends for bowl games they would blow their stipend for the entire trip in one night at a strip club. This money will be mismanaged.

You have to factor in food expenses, gas, various school supplies, etc.
Meals or a meal plan are already provided to scholarship athletes
Gas? That is not a necessity. And we got travel stipends for Thanksgiving/Christmas.

They are already paying their room and board. What else is there?
You gotta also remember college athletes basically aren't allowed to work, certainly not enough to make much of a difference.

Because it will never be enough. Give the kids a $1500 stipend, they will say they need $3000. Give them that, they'll say they need $10,000.
What are they going to buy that they aren't already getting?
Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding

Believe it or not there are college students that can make it through college without cars
That doesn't make sense.

Why do people keep repeating this as if its true?
I played football in college and worked 80 hours a week for the Fort Worth Cats Baseball team in the summer.
In the winter/spring I also worked part time at various places.
Hell one day after an offseason workout we had a guy from Pizza Hut Park come in telling us all that they were hiring us to do security at events there throughout the Spring and Summer. Hell at least 1/3 of the team ended up doing that, from the star players to the benchwarmers.
You are allowed to work in the offseason. It's just not feasible during the season.

Only one of these things isn't covered, gas.
That's 3 possible expenses right there.

It's called personal responsibility
I played football in college, worked in the offseason, and had a car.
I SAVED my money that I made in the offseason so I could have money in the bank during the season when I couldn't work.
Boo hoo if these guys waste all their money meant for car/gas and couldn't manage/budget/save it. Those scholarship players got big off campus checks every month that was more than enough to cover rent/food, so if they had no money for gas it was their fault for being financial retards.

Some of these kids have nothing; their families have nothing. Yeah, there are many, maybe even most, whose families are in good shape, or good enough shape, but there are plenty who have nothing. Even Dabo's mom had to live with him in his dorm room because they had nothing. Why begrudge them a few thousand dollars?

The fact that you are advocating the school/athletic department paying for cars and insurance for its players is telling me that you are not reasonable enough to discuss these issues with

A lot of our better players worked in the summer.
There were a couple of my teammates, now in the NFL, who worked with me at Colonial Country Club one summer.

I'm not saying that. I'm just wondering where that falls under the cost of attendance

It's not that and hasn't been for a long time, not sure why we pretend that it is.
