I always ask this question of friends who are just now having kids who have their whole lives planned out as though the kids will just be an extension of themselves. Sadly, not all of them are as open as you are. I have a 14 year old who is 6'2" and still growing. Basketball coaches always try to talk him into playing. Even had a swim coach once. But, he's a book worm. Reads non stop and couldn't care less about sports.

I get it all from my dad. Played soccer at first. Asked if I could play baseball one day. Dad was like, "Uh, well let's go play some baseball then." Overbearing parents are baaaaad.

My 10 yo old is the same, but swap reading for music. He's really into guitar and violin. No offense to the football parents, but I'm glad he's not interested in that.

Great article. I have a friend that does this and they are absolutely miserable. Son plays travel ball and they are on the road almost every weekend year round as their kid (11 years old) plays both Winter and Summer League travel baseball.

She was complaining that they haven't been home for Thanksgiving and Easter and how they never have time to clean because they "have" to go to these tournaments.

Tried to tell her it was OK to not go crazy. even told her that her son complains about not getting to be with his friends. Her response was "he complains sometimes but he really loves it, he just says that, he doesn't mean it."

Really sad to see parents like that. And yes she is already talking about his "future" in baseball because of how good he is.

Same here because he loves it but swap out football for wrestling and throw some gymnastics in there. I wish there were organized dirtbike and skateboard teams because he's obsessed with that shite too and I'm no Tony Eagle so he could use some coaching there.

The money they spend
The pressure they put on their kid
The expectations ramping up causing tension

are potentially long range problems for emotional development. Plus playing so many games devalues the actual experience of competing

I read a great study some time ago about how specialization in kid sports is destroying young bodies at an alarming rate.

13yr olds getting Tommy Johns

Teenage girls who are crazy overdeveloped on one side thanks to golf.

The list goes on and on.

Seasonal sports plus free outside play/ woods time for my kids.

Have some really close friends who have a daughter who does competitive cheerleading. She just started HS and is missing assignments due to practices and private tumbling sessions, etc. Sometimes the kid doesn't get to bed until 2 am on school nights. It's insane.

Having kids play travel ball under the age of 15 is selfish and just feeds the parents egos. It's a shame as the kids get burnt out time and time again. Having a travel ball team for kids under 10 is simply retarded. Let the kids be kids and have fun not grow into egotistical idiots like thier parents. And yes I'm a coach with knowledge in the subject.

Are you from the northshore? I find the attitude toward sports to be worse here. Like you're a failed parent of your kid isn't in sports. The travel ball inclination is strong here.

Agree. Seeing a bunch of kids from 1 school, with post surgery boots and braces on has got to be an indication of misuse or overuse, not purely accidental.

I said this exact thing 2 nights ago to a good friend while watching our girls play basketball. No brag...our daughter is one of the best athletes on the team, if not the best. Other father was complimenting her. I said that she loves to play.

Play.

3 sports. Summers off. You often see those on the courts with that look of a dog focussed on a frisbee and wonder if they really enjoy it.

Let them play. Give em a break (not the literal kind that requires surgery).

He didn't complain when he did my surgeries.

They should be more concerned with teaching the kids proper mechanics instead of worrying about overuse.

Some other countries throw 500-600 balls a day, no issues. We get in a hoopla over 70+ from the mound?

Pussification, teach proper mechanics and you have no issues.

Not to mention the parent-to-parent guilty pressure to get your kids on their summer league teams? Too many times with the 3 kids we have.

Anyone know the cost breakdowns for something like playing baseball year round? What is it to join the leagues? I can only imagine it has to get expensive with gear, hotels, etc.

We did summer baseball with our oldest. We spent bucks. I dont have any analysis but we did buy a new Suburban for the 2nd summer trips! Needed the space taking turns driving and carrying equipment. Put that in the equation, huh?

Ps.This boy played in college: basketball!

Good man.

The youth baseball culture is out of control. Parents spend $10,000s of dollars on youth baseball and then throw hissy fits when their kids get cut from the Freshman team in high school. CHS is having Freshmen tryouts this week. There are 70+ kids trying out for 20 spots and 90% of them played intense travel ball. Whats hysterical is that most of the kids who end up making the team are guys who play more than one sport.

Limiting a kid to a single sport before HS is absolutely absurd. Even in HS, if your kid is talented enough to do two sports, he should.

My kids aren't and I'm kind of grateful.

Maybe I'm lazy, but honestly, that shite sounds/looks exhausting from my perspective as a parent. I have friends/coworkers who's social lives are their kids sports. Gone out of town every weekend for some tourny all year long.

I know it pays off for some of them, but to hell with all that.
