The game Clemson game up 70 to Geno and WVU

What happened?
I was curious what happened since our fans focused on that being a big deal yesterday... Here are Geno's highlights..they were relentless throwing the ball all night...
Clemson's offense must have got shut down after adjustments because they were leading entering the 2nd QTR - only 13 pts the rest of the game.
It appears the defense got exhausted late in the 2nd QTR...chasing WVU around all night and began to give up big plays as the game went on...
it does appear Steele was trying to pressure Geno all night but he was savvy enough to throw where the blitz or pressure was coming from...at times running for first downs.
Clemson went to the orange bowl...so they were pretty decent team that year
Month off, stuff happens.
Would the Chavis approach work better by not having DL over pressure the QB?
"create negative plays on 1st and/or 2nd down, limit big plays is key to stopping modern day offenses...Steele mentioned that in the Presser today

What people fail to realize is that we gave up 533 yards to the same team.

4 turnovers by Clemson and WVU held the ball 70% of the game. Still a chit show

Saban lost to ULM
Urban lost to VT
Peyton Manning and the Broncos looked pitiful in SB vs Seattle
Lane Kiffin has effed up every program he's been with. And on and on.

Shite happened (as you said). It sometimes inexplicably does.

If only LSU had played West Virginia that season so that we could compare and contrast...
LINK
Geno Smith did pass for 38/65 for 463 yards, 2 TDs against LSU. They ran for another 70 as a team.
LSU piled up 366 yards of total offense: 180 in the air from Lee and 186 on the ground.
But WVU turned the ball over 4 times and turned it over on downs once. Mo Claiborne housed a kickoff return. Out of 15 drives, WVU got in the red zone only 3 times. They started 6 drives inside their own 10 yard line. 10 of their drives went for less than 40 yards and 5 of those resulted in turning the ball over either on downs, INT or fumble.
So yes, Chavis gave up a shitton of yards to Geno Smith too. Difference was turnovers and special teams.

I thought this
but they failed to score. Also as i recall they got close but a LSU punt return killed their momentum. I remember thinking Chavis .....do something they are coming back. Am i correct?

You sir are correct. And that was probably our best defense ever.

Reading the recaps and box scores from that 2011 LSU team still blows me away.

He was fired before that game

He didn't coach the game Regardless of the semantics, Steele confirmed Thursday in a text message to ESPN.com that he will not return to Clemson in 2012.
The decision followed one of the program's worst defensive performances, as Clemson suffered an embarrassing 70-33 loss to West Virginia in the Discover Orange Bowl. The 70 points were the most points scored by a team in any bowl game.

2011 WVU vs. LSU:
28 first downs
533 yards
7.1 yards per pass
3.2 yards per rush
2011 WVU vs. Clemson
31 first downs
595 yards
8.8 yards per pass
4.3 yards per rush
LSU had just better statistics vs WVU than Clemson did so imagine what Clemson's defense could have done with LSU's talent
oh wait..

...as I understand the circumstances of WVU v Clemson "70 point" Orange Bowl game ( heard on radio ) , many points WVU got not b/c bad "D" , to wit, WVU scores included :
- a pick 6 TD
- a 99 yd fumble return TD
- turnovers that led to 2 "drives" for WVU scores of like 16 yds ,
20 yds
- some kind of kickoff or punt return score
.... thats a lot (half) of the points. Cant put those on the D. Plus , it was "bowl game" , and got a bit out of control with the turnovers and "short field" Those things happen. I'm not concerned about it . JMHO

Steele was knew he was leaving before the game. Remember that's what Chavis did and players probably knew this before bowl game against ND

A whole lot of blow coverage in that game. LB's looked lost, easily faked on play action.

Yeah..
Seeing as how we won the SEC, beat the Rose bowl champion, the Orange bowl champion, and the eventual national champion (away) while having a better record, we're all blown away.
Also. frick bama.
Sorry to hijack.. continue on.
