Except that Sumlin is an offensive-minded coach whose offenses have actually been very good.

Impressive! 13-11 in SEC play with that prolific offense which dropped off big time when JFF left.
A&M and Sumlin's crown jewel is beating Alabama in 2012. They've done dick other than that.

fair enough.. but..
15 players who can leave early will win more games than 7 players who can leave early.
your biggest problem defensively "of late" is that you can't play defense.
Maybe Chavis will change the entire culture at A&M. And maybe Steele and O will do the same.
Or maybe not. But we'll still be better off than A&M.
I'd still rank as
Shoop/O
Chavis/O
Pendergast/O
Steele/O
Chavis/Haley

y'all have had an elite defense for years. Quite possibly your biggest problem defensively of late is that your players are leaving school early. Somehow, you are convinced that you haven't recruited well enough and that's what is holding you back
Now two thirds of your staff is gone. And you've replaced them with a guy that's been fired from a similar position 3 times and a guy that was collecting unemployment checks for the last year.
And your takeaway is that you are better off?
Then why has our linebacker and dline production fell off the last few years. There has definitely been a little decline on that side of the ball lately. Our defense has been good but could've been a lot better if Chavis could hold his own weight with recruiting. Linebackers have been the weakest spot on the defense recently and that is the Chiefs "specialty". I love how you little Aggies that think you know more about us than we do.

2012 Alabama wasn't on the offense. 2013 Alabama wasn't on the offense. 2014 Alabama wasn't on the offense. Those have been our big games. The D shite the bed in all 3.
2012 lost to Bama 21-17... and you assign all blame to the defense, none to the offense.
2013 lost to Bama 38-17... and you assign all blame to the defense, none to the offense.
2014 lost to Bama 20-13 in OT... and you assign all blame to the defense, none to the offense.
You have become so accustomed to great defense, that you just assume that's how it's supposed to be. I mean, you held Bama to 13 points in regulation in 2014. No other team Bama faced was that effective. And yet you STILL say that was a game in which the D "shite the bed".
Conversely, you've become so accustomed to BAD offense, that you essentially give it a pass. Your offense averaged 15.7 points per game against Bama. Bama hasn't scored less than 17 points in any game the past three seasons. 15.7 ppg just isn't going to cut it against them.
Yes, the Defense let you down in 2013, but it was the only reason you were in the other two games.

yeah we are legitimately numb to what a competent offense is at LSU right now
and i don't say that in any sort of ironic way. to keep the faith our fanbase has to ring whatever positive spin they can out of our offensive failures (statistically). if 2013 is our ceiling then we are in trouble without a super duper elite D

Did you not see how Chiefs style in crunch time allowed them to go right down the field to tie the game in the blink of an eye? You will understand when you get to witness it first hand if you have a slim lead in the fourth quarter and need a stand from the defense. Don't act surprised when it happens, you were warned.

chief's D has its faults for sure, but at best steele's D has an even stronger rep for giving up massive plays regularly at all times in the game
and steele has nothing close to what chavis did in 2011

I can understand your frustration, but LSU is only in the position of protecting a lead in the first place thanks to the defense. If LSU's offense were of comparable quality to it's defense, then those last minute drives are for garbage TDs to cut the lead to 4 scores instead of 5.
If Chavis holds our opponents to 13-17 points a game, I'll take it. He can give those points up anytime he wants. Our offense should do their job and score more than that.

tmc94,
chavis sat on his arse and lsu lost some great instate talent.
lsu had almost NO SACKS in the last few years!
third and chavis = enuf said.
EDIT TO delete negative.

I don't think anyone is disagreeing with you.
Coaches can be good coaches and lose games and coaches can be bad coaches and win games.
IF the W-L target is (arbitrarily) 13-2
and..
If Maryland's coaches had Bama's 2014 players...
and Bama's coaches had Maryland's 2014 talent...
Who would get closer to the target record?
The optimism comes from the fact that the defense won't falter immensely. And that we'll get that one "Cam Robison" who will push us over the edge.

bullshite to put that on the D when they did their part for 58 minutes. The O needs to score more. The blame on that games goes to Les Miles.

Agreed mostly, but they still needed to score more.

Again, look at the amount of points LSU scored. The D held Bama all game. Yes, that last drive in regulation was the final straw, but do you really just excuse the other 59 minutes?

We've slipped in DL (DT particularly) and LB recruiting.
I'm a certified positiger and I'm underwhelmed by Steele because he has never produced anything like an outstanding defense.
On the other hand, Chavis was a liability in recruiting and his defense has lost some big ballgames over the past few years - particularly 2/3 of the Bama games since 1/9/2012. But we didn't fire him - he quit. If Steele is the best option - I'm hopeful for the best. Orgeron is an outstanding recruiter and DL coach.
Just like all of Miles' assistant hires - I hope this works out - I really do.

TAMU doesnt have the talent to hold good offenses under 20 pts
Even LSUs farce of an offense has proven that recently
Going to need a couple of good recruiting classes but thats whats been said since 2012
Chavis D with subpar talent = long days at office
Buckle up lil bro

What if the choice is Chavis or Steele/Orgeron/Haley?
It could be that Haley is serving an administrative job until he can be brought back on as a coach. Possibly, reassigned to LBs coach and work closely with Steele as DC to put himself in position to get what he ultimately wants.

Chavis will be the death of Aggies. His style is not a good fit for fast paced offenses. Once again little brother, yall will get schooled.

Good list.
Chavis + Orgeron would have been incredible. O would've brought the energy and aggressive style as well as better recruits. Chavis would've been consistent with his gameplan and we would have continued sound fundamentals.
