I'm going to drop out of our trading investment game

I posted the following in the stickied investment game thread but I'm not sure if all the game's players read that thread, so I'm repeating what I wrote here.
quote:
To Brink and everyone else playing the investment game, I'm going to drop out of the game.
Yesterday afternoon I discovered what I thought was a one-time only or temporary glitch in the game vs. my Schwab trading screen, StreetSmartPro.
Long story short, I discovered I could do a perfect arbitrage in the game's trading screen every time I traded by comparing the game's prices to my Schwab trading screen's prices. That goes for any stock or ETF all the time.
If you look at my trading yesterday and today you'll see that I made $217,000 trading profit yesterday and I've made just under $309,000 today in the first 2 1/2 hours of trading. That's more than I made all of the five trading days last week plus on this Monday before I discovered the arbitrage advantage yesterday afternoon.
If I continued to play the game I could probably make up to or maybe even well over $1 million/day every day just by making the maximum allowable $$ amount of buys or short sales repeatedly during every day.
Yesterday when I saw the arbitrage I thought it was a temporary anomaly between the screens but today I'm convinced it's a permanent, and unfair, advantage that makes me look like an investment genius (which I'm not) and it also probably spoils the game for others who don't have the arbitrage advantage I have.
I don't want to spoil the game for others. That wasn't why we set up this game.
At least now I know how the HFT traders at Goldman Sachs feel!
So, I'll either delete my game's name or I just won't make any more trades starting now.
Good luck to everyone else!

Its up to you man. Me personally, I have not been that active and I set the damn thing up.
But its whatever you want to do, if you want to keep playing and just not get the gift card at the end, that's cool too. But I hope you continue to contribute to the thread, peoples ideas, etc.

Not pointing fingers at my fellow traders (I'm getting my arse kicked), but since day 1, I always thought the numbers on the leaderboard looked a little strange. That sure is some mighty good trading...

Thanks, Brink. I'm a little embarrassed it took me more than a week to notice the pricing disparity.
My Schwab screen's prices are sporadically about a minute ahead of the prices on the game's trading screen. All I have to do is look for big differences in the two pricing screens and either short or buy a stock and then wait a minute to cover or sell for a guaranteed profit every time.
Like I said, now I know how the HFT traders at Goldman feel.....
It takes the fun out of it for me and it's not fair to everyone else.
I'll keep reading the game thread and also follow the rankings.

quote:Yeah, it's not real world, that's for sure. Last week I was just lucky, which I'd rather be lucky than good any day. But starting yesterday afternoon when I noticed the pricing discrepancy pattern, I felt like I had been given the keys to the bank's vault.

I'm sure not accusing the other players who are doing well of doing anything wrong. They are probably doing it honestly and are just really good at the game. More power to them!
I know it's not fair for me to keep playing now that I know how to beat the game.

Things have been slow at work, so I've had time to buy/short and refresh the screen until I get the results that I want. It's not really rocket science, it's just having the time to daytrade and finding that stock that's volatile enough to make 500 trades per day and make a killing (buy low, short high, make money with every fluctuation)

I decided I'm quitting the in and out business yesterday myself... I played "the game" on Monday just for the hell of it, but decided it was pretty much a waste of my time.
It's gotten to the point now whoever is willing to spend the most time actively trading will be the leader. I'll still play but looking for some longer holds from now on.

That's kind of how I envisioned the game to be from the beginning, and how I am playing it.
BUT, kudos to those that are actively trading and making a "fantasy" killing! They are playing the game. It reminds me of my fantasy hockey team ( I know right?) where I am pretty much the only active one and I am 14-0.
Ultimately, I just hope somebody gets something out of it.

As the "commish" can you put a limit on the number of trades someone can make in a day? I intended on using a buy/hold strategy, but once I started playing around with shorting stocks, and the numbers started multiplying, it got really fun! Having said that, I'd definitely like to switch to a buy/hold scenario and just see what my portfolio does.

I agree. I just started doing what the leaders where doing and ran it up to 2mil rather quick.
Only reason I wanted to play is to learn a little more about the market and maybe see how I somewhat "realistically" would have fared by doing my own trading.
The longer holding times would help level the field a little, but when dividends were out of play, it made it a little more short-term for everyone. either way, its still fun, because somewhere there is someone day trading like this in real life. Kudos to them!!!

I have no idea but I don't think that was one of the options available to me at the time when I set it up so I am going to say no.

Yes I do agree. oh well. read a little on the "arbitrage" shite today after you brought it up...
How often do you think this happens in real life?

A perfect (meaning riskless) arbitrage? Almost never. At least not for any significant monetary amount.
The HFT trades purport to be a form of micro-amount arbitrages multiplied by massive volumes to achieve their profits.
I enjoyed the trading advantage at first but it made me feel guilty.....like I was cheating on you and the other players and I did not like that feeling. It was like getting a minute's head start on the price ticker.
I kept waiting for the prices to stay synced up but it never happened.
There were times when the prices were a half point ($.50) or more different for about 20 seconds and all I had to do was get my order input and click on submit. Guaranteed BIG profit!
It was the right thing to do for me to drop out.

Even if it did, it wouldn't last long anyway.

Don't drop out on my account. I don't know what the hell I'm doing anyways. You've been pretty helpful in answering my dumbass questions I tend to have. I'm sure you'll win the Nobel Prize for bowing out though...
