Chevy Duramax Coolant Problem Question for OT Mechanics

I have been having problems with my coolant level in my Duramax. I replaced a leaking water pump but my coolant level still drops quickly. I believe the leak has been fixed but the coolant is pouring through the overflow tube at times. Any ideas what could be causing this.
TIA

I as not as easily convinced.

Not sure, but I've had a thermostat issue with my Duramax. Low coolant was a symptom. That said, I just rolled over 300,000 miles on my GMC and it's still running like a scalded arse ape.

We ran a pressure test on the system. No evident leaks. The coolant is coming out the overflow on the reservoir.

I was just messing with you. You have a blown out head gasket.
eta: If you are really, really lucky, you might have a bad radiator cap. Inspect the rubber gasket on it for cracks.

Yea head gasket would be my guess. You're pushing compression into the coolant system

On that engine, its almost a no brainer= bad head gasket.
Knew 2 guys in Homer that had 2003 Duramax's and they both needed head gaskets within warranty. One of them needed a head too.
Obviously there have been improvements, but its still a common enough problem with ANY diesel. Doesn't matter who makes it.

People that used tuners or High performance chip are more susceptible to damage. That engine can make enough torque to stretch the head bolts.

Thanks everyone. Is replacing a bad head gasket expensive?

I'm not sure on that. I had a 06, and now an '11. I haven't had serious trouble, but oil changes are almost $100.

Heater hose elbows and water pumps go out on those things. $9 for plastic heater hose elbows or $11 for aluminum lifetime warranty ones.

Need to do a leak down test to confirm blown head gasket. But if you are pushing out coolant from the overflow (and not overheating) that is most likely the problem.
A new head gasket on a modern diesel is above the scope of most home mechanics.
Definitely get a quote. If you're around BR, Tricare on Airline specializes in newer diesel repairs.

Any recommendations for the West Monroe area?

I agree with the others...sounds like when the water pump went out, you overheated and either blew a head gasket or cracked a cylinder head...
have to admit, I think you should be able to detect that with a coolant system pressure test, though...

I have an 05 GMC 1500 with about 150k miles on it. Guess a couple of weeks ago it started overheating and I had to add coolant. Was a slower leak but now when I park it leaves a big puddle. It's gotten to where every 3 days or so I have to fill it up again. The water pump was replaced about 1-1/2 year and a half ago. Guess it's probably the head gasket?

Sorry no recommendations up there.
Try the outdoor board if you don't get any hits on the OT for a referral in that area.
Regardless I would try and find a diesel specialist and in my experience avoid the dealer unless they are known to be good from the locals.

Have a leak down test done

I had the same issue with my 2004 duramax, it wound up being the injector cups leaking.
