They should have kept the Wonderwall.

But if anyone is feeling a bit nostalgic or just didn't see any of the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition, search on YouTube, there are several videos showing overviews of the fair and even a monorail ride along video.

ETA: Here are some of my favorites
Monorail ride before the fair opened
WDSU TV Special
Hilton Promo
Film highlighting fair construction

I just got a book about the NY Fair in 1939, looking forward to reading it.

My grandmother and her family attended when she was growing up. They drove from Louisiana, mainly on two lane highways. She remembers there was a large crowd around a display featuring a TV and camera. Visitors would stand in line to be captured on camera and displayed on this new invention. Each person would receive a certificate stating they had appeared on television.

I think this is true, decades ago they were something special with really futuristic things to draw you in...today, hard to create that 'wow' factor- hard to impress...

not attending the '84 world's fair is one thing that I really regret...I was just out of high school at the time and really didn't realize just how rare the opportunity to attend one is...if there is a world's fair within a few hours of your house, you just should check it out regardless of whether you are interested or not...

same feelings about having never attended the olympics...

There was also one in New Orleans in 1884.

Yup, it's now Audubon Park. It's part of the reason New Orleans got the fair in 1984 - 100th anniversary of the 1884 expo. It's pretty sad, though, that so many buildings get constructed for the fairs but so few survive very long afterwards.

Not sure what you're confused about, the site of the World Cotton Centennial in 1884 is where Audubon Park sits today.

Yep, that's a Louisiana fair all right

"The 1884 World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition, our first World's Fair, took place in what is now Audubon Park. One of the grand Cotton Centennial buildings was Horticultural Hall, in which was displayed "...all the various kinds of tropical shrubbery and flowers, foliage and plants of the choicest varieties" for all of the fair's visitors to enjoy. Horticultural Hall remained in place after the Cotton Centennial closed in 1885 and was a major attraction in Audubon Park until its destruction by the great 1915 hurricane. This view of the Hall appeared in the 1903 Yearbook of Audubon Park."

Every time a World's Fair topic is raised in New Orleans, you can't go two seconds and not hear about the Bankruptcy. The point of the Louisiana World's Fair was not just about a 3 month event. Had it not been for that fair, the riverfront would today be a collection of rotten warehouses, projects, and crack houses near a convention center called the rivergate. There would be nothing compared to the convention industry there is now had it not been for that fair.

No doubt, but the question was posed as to why they aren't around anymore (even though they are). It's no secret, however, that the financial troubles of the 1984 expo are a big reason that there hasn't been a World's Fair in the states since. Without the fair, the warehouse district wouldn't be where it is today and the riverfront would look drastically different.

Damn that's an awesome looking building. Would have been cool to keep that around.

Yeah, these events just like the Olympics are not for everyone. I can only imagine how Sochi is going to look like in a few years.

While it certainly kickstarted the revitalization of that area, it's hard to contend there is NO WAY such a thing could have happened without that boondoggle. Plenty of other cities have revitalized similar areas without a World's Fair.

The life sized Pantheon they built is awesome.
