Cataloochee isn't any better than Ober.
Go to Sugar or Beech.
Hiking and sex in the hot tub is best things about the mountains if you don't fly fish.

go, lots of fun. Alot of these hard asses like to say dont go its a tourist trap, they think its the hipster thing to do. But just like anywhere you go there can be tourist traps. Go to the park, go to cades cove, eat at the old mill, go to the apple barn, do the moonshine tasting, if you have never been you should go to dollywood and dixie stampede. Ober gatlinburg to ice skate... we go to gatlinburg every year as a famly, and have a blast.

Pancakes, hillbilly golf, taffy, air brushed NASCAR shirt.
Rinse and repeat.

I don't care much for pancakes, so I feel like I'm already not going to enjoy much of the place.
Plan to take my family up there for the first time early this summer. I completely understand all of the touristy shite negative stuff, but I like doing goofy shite with the kids. We will go once, mostly do outdoor stuff and have fun.
I've survived two trips to Disney, I'm sure I can survive the hillbilly tourist mecca.

Cjeck out Elkmont, TN. I highly recommend it! It's an old logging community that still has the cabins still standing! It's really awesome It's about a 30 minute drive from gatlinburg and is a very beautiful drive! There are several spots you can stop and picnic and/or site see!
