Nolan and Wes Anderson are great, Tarantino and PTA are overrated hacks. PTA couldn't tell a story if it walked up and punched him in the mouth and Tarantino is a filmmaker for teenagers eager to see mountains of blood and hear curse words.
The Coen Brothers are amazing.
Scorsese is good, too, but he needs to learn to leave some material on the cutting room floor, because God damn his movies are always 15-30 minutes too long.
Aronofsky and Spike Jonze are up there for me, too. Every movie of Aronofsky's, except Noah which I haven't seen, is tremendous and thought provoking. Jonze is just out there and unique.
Spielberg is still great, too, as is Fincher. D. O. Russell and Linklater are pretty great.

The majority of Directors listed in this thread would answer David Lynch and I would agree with them.

I'm thinking more new wave directors, a few not yet mentioned:
Jeff Nichols - Mud, Take Shelter, Shotgun Stories
Apichatpong Weerasethakul - Uncle Boonmee Who Can.., Tropical Malady, Syndromes and a Centrury
The Dardenne Brothers - Two Days One Night, The Kid with a Bike, L'enfant, The Son
Notable rookie directors:
T. Sean Durkin - Martha Marcy May Marlene
James Ward Byrkit - Coherence
Lake Bell - In a World...
Ana Lily Amirpur - A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night
Ben Zeitlin - Beasts of the Southern Wild
Drew Goddard - A Cabin in the Woods (only directorial credit to date)
