Josh Smith, the Houston Rockets, and the Detroit Pistons

Josh Smith with the Houston Rockets --
27 mpg, 35% fg%, 57% ft%, 3.3 tpg, 9.7 ppg.
He also has not blocked a shot, and has not made a 3pt fg in 4 attempts. Houston is 1-2 with Smith, with their lone victory in OT vs. Memphis.
Meanwhile, the Pistons are 2-0 without Smith (5-23 with him). During the two victories, the Pistons arguably had their two best offensive outputs of the season (119 vs. Indiana - one of the best defensive teams in basketball....and 103 vs. Cleveland, including 17 3s).
The main replacement of Smith is Jonas Jerebko. The last two games, he is shooting 47% from the field, 50% from 3, and averaging 10 ppg and 6.5 rpg in about 28 mpg.
Overall, will this be a trend for Smith, Houston, and/or Detroit? Or is it still way too early to tell?

I think both teams made the right move. Houston doesn't win the MEM game without Smith, and he didn't cause them to lose either of the others.
I haven't seen any of the Pistons games so can't comment on them.

Two of those three point attempts were at the buzzer, first of all. I am slightly worried about Smith, but McHale is just trying to figure out how to use all of this depth right now. Adding Corey Brewer and Josh Smith without losing a real contributor really changed the dynamic. Not to mention, that Houston's two losses were to the Spurs and Wizards in close games (two very good teams), and Smith was very clutch in the Memphis win.
It is definitely way too early to tell. I think Smith can do well in Houston once he figures out his role. From what I have seen, he is better with the second unit. Time will tell if McHale will stick him there and if Smith would be okay with that.

3 games bro, 3 GAMES. He's finding his role. Thankfully HOU is so loaded they can afford a couple bad games to figure things out.

Yes, I can't comment any further than posting the stats. I have seen only a few minutes of Smith with Houston, that is it. Haven't seen how well/bad he fits in.

I mentioned it in the OP. 3.3 per game.

I hate giving away games in this west race, but I'm not concerned about this becoming a trend simply b/c McHale/Morey will eventually cut bait if necessary. There is nothing invested in Smith.
Will the move itself fail? Definitely possible. It was dumb, dumb, dumb to insert him in the starting lineup. That was a major fail! Stupid to promise him that. Rockets had the most money, give him that and nothing more.

Well he hasn't fit in like Brewer who has hit something like 10/12 corner threes. But there's tons of time.

Detroit Pistons 109
Orlando Magic 86
Pistons now 3-0 without Smith (5-23 with him).

He has to adapt to a new role, give him a few games. He should be banned from ever taking a three pointer though
He should have a little shock collar that goes off every time he rises up to shoot outside the arc

The Rockets haven't been playing great even before Josh Smith signed.
Howard hasn't looked good since he hurt his shoulder. He's been playing, but almost looks like he isn't trying. He's playing hurt it seems.
Many players came back from injury around the same time. Corey Brewer, Alexey Shved, and Josh Smith were all added to the rotation.
So Ariza, Motiejunas, and Papanikolaou have all been getting less minutes.
Tarik Black was cut to make room for Smith.
So the team has seen a pretty big shift in their line-ups, including players who are brand new to the team.
So they've been struggling, but it has more to do with the dramatic changes than Smith as an individual player.
It will be rough for a little bit, but hopefully they'll get it together and jell. They will now drop more regular season games than if they made no changes, but the team should be a better team come playoff time.

I still think it was a solid move by Houston, because they have hardly anything to lose by it, but my concern about it was always Smiths ego and his insistence on being a deep shooter. I hope he adjusts and finds his niche on the team, but if not, its not hard to release him. I think its way too soon to peg the move a dud, but another 3 weeks like this and I will be more inclined to call it so.

To those saying "Its only been 3 games", I counter with: this isn't the 3rd game of Smith's career.
He is what he is.
Still a smart move by Houston, but its one that isn't going to work out. He's a talented bum.
