Yeah there are definitely way more accomplished female athletes this year. She was a nice story for about two weeks.

why would the AP need to make news? they are the news. she was the most notable female athlete this year. name another who made as many headlines as this girl.

So should the award go to most dominant or most notable?

i don't need to google, i watched. was there even a figure skater (individual) for the US to win a medal? i don't recall one.
there may have been one or two females win medals in skiing, but no names that stayed in headlines

she was notable not only for being a female but for also exceeding. so a mixture of both.
here are the results from the olympics:

is there really any female on that list more deserving from Sochi? i'm waiting for someone to give me another name and an argument because so far nobody has

She was in headlines for like 2 weeks. Girls mature earlier than boys. I remember chicks dominating sports at recess in 6th grade. We had actual OLYMPIC athletes win GOLD MEDALS.
ETA:
You just linked 5 American women that won gold medals in the damn Olympics.

So a girl is as athletic as a boy before the parties go through puberty. This is not news, nor is it news when a girl can compete with boys in athletic events because of this reality. If a girl did this in college or the minor leagues, then by all means, give her the award. However, giving this award to her without thinking about the true impact here is belittling to other female athletes who had tremendous years.
Accepting that adult males are better athletes than adult females at the highest levels is not sexist or intolerant. Celebrating Davis' accomplishment as something more than it was does not serve to advance female athletics. Kudos to what she did in the LLWS, but the title is better awarded to a female athlete at the highest level who dominated her competition at the pinnacle.
