I'm sure "their self-preservation as a class" keeps them up at night

Brilliant!
That doesn't work as a summary at all. Moore is against Burger King's inversion (although, BK says that's not what the merger is about) and wants higher wages for fast-food workers, but he never expressed anger over paying taxes.

More lethal than the Whopper: How Burger King pleases the 1 percent, screws its workers
For the past year, I’ve worked at a Burger King in Tampa, Florida, making $9 an hour. Taxes are taken right out of my paycheck like they are for most people in America

If your main argument regarding this story is a broader one about corporate tax rates, okay, but you have to also say that Burger King is a fraud in this instance, because they say that's not what this deal is about.

Moore is against Burger King's inversion

Did you not read the full article? I gave you the main points. Your summary didn't match up. You said:
That's just not accurate.

That's just not accurate.

That may or may not be true. I have no idea, and I don't think you do either. It's obviously fashionable to bash Moore in this thread, but at least give him a fair shake on what his position is.

Perhaps it would be more accurate to say he's pissed being stuck flipping burgers for burger flipper wages.
Unfortunately he approached the rest of the discussion with a burger flipper's intellect.

LOL. Yeah like the 90 percent of us have to be so concerned about the tax rates of the top 10 percent.
Actually, we do.

They have enough money and influence in this country to keep their tax rates from getting too high
Or, how about we keep their taxes AND their influence low with a smaller, less malleable government.

His position seems to be: "I get paid crappy wages, and BK gets out of paying US tax and makes tons of money for the 1 percent". I'm assuming he's thinking the 1 percent are the people that run the corporate entity and own the stock.
He may have reason to be upset with his wages... he needs to take that up with whoever owns his store. And he clearly has no idea how inversions work.

As for me, I have joined a movement of other fast-food workers who want companies like Burger King to be responsible to their employees and the people they serve. We want them to pay their workers $15 an hour and respect our right to form a union without retaliation. Better wages would lift a lot of Burger King’s workers out of poverty, and mean that we wouldn’t need to rely on food stamps to feed our families. And we want the company to pay its fair share of taxes like its employees already do.

So your solution is to cement their position as the top 1% by moving to socialism, screwing anybody who would like to join the ranks of the wealthy? More regulation and higher taxes only benefit those who have enough money to not be affected by the difference. The first step in establishing a monopoly is to have a government entity regulate your competition out of business.
You people astound me.

Most BK employees don't pay taxes.

When you factor in the refund, you're probably right. I'd be interested to see some numbers on that.

Really, you have to make enough money to eliminate the Earned Income Tax Credit to pay any significant amount in Federal taxes. I cost myself several thousand dollars in taxes by making $400 too much one year.
Don't let anybody tell you that bullshite line about "you're only taxed a higher percentage on the income over each threshold." When it comes to the EITC, pay attention to where you are income-wise.

Most pay payroll taxes, but it appears 43% don't pay income taxes.
quote:
Thanks to payroll taxes, it's nearly impossible to get away completely tax-free today. In fact, "just 14% of households pay neither income nor payroll tax and two-thirds of them are elderly," according to the TCP. And then there are taxes closer to home to consider. You'd be hard-pressed to find households who don't get hit with state or local income, sales, and property taxes.
Of the 43% of households owing no federal income tax this year, about half simply earned too little income to qualify, including many retired workers who live on Social Security. The remaining households likely qualify for breaks via the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit.
Most pay payroll taxes, but it appears 43% don't pay income taxes.
