Any of you guys been to Telluride? I have a friend that might be able to hook me up with some discounted lift passes.

The only catch is that its far from pretty much every airport that I've seen.

Nice! My buddy in boulder has a friend with a cabin at crested and free ski passes so couldn't turn that offer down. If you feel like meeting up for a few beers, hit me up. Indeoksuks @ yahoo

I sure will. It's my bachelor party and a buddy knows someone and got us a free place to stay too. First time skiing for me as well

Telluride is amazing from what I hear, but I have never been. I likely won't make it this season as it a 6 hour drive from Denver

The interstate from Denver west to the pass can be a bitch . I actually saw a 70 car pile up years ago . You couldn't see the past the hood of your car snowing so hard with thunder and lighting .

I regularly have 3-4 hour trips from the city. If I was going just to ski/snowboard, I would go with Utah. If you want to smoke weed legally and do some partying, then you are better off in Colorado

Skied: Japan
Crested Butte (2)
Aspen
Lake Tahoe

Learned in Japan while in the A.F. Snow was wet and icey. Crested was nice both times, not very crowded and a quaint little town. Aspen was cool, but crowded as hell. It was during Mardi Gras and the whole mountain seemed like everyone was from Louisiana. Tahoe was awesome, the snow isn't quite like Colorado, but doable. And the gambling and night life beat the aforementioned. We stayed at Harveys which was bought right after we left by Harrahs. They had buses everymorning for most of the resorts around the lake for cheap.

huge amount of LA skiers then, probably all want to get the hell away from all of that culture in NO, go to Crusty Butt hairs, Steamboat for fairly close places with good enough night life, Utah has great skiing in the Cottonwood with Alta, Brighton, Snowbird, and Solitude, but you're stuck with SLC as your night life, Park City, not as good of skiing but a little more night life, have fun

Japan was an awesome experience. Learning to snow ski was the kicker. The mountains are small compared to the Rockies, but for a kid from Louisiana who has never skied, it was more than enough. Our favorite place was a couple of hours away, and it only one way up on a tram. It took about 30 minutes to make it down. One side was open, and the other meandered through a forest. If you made 6 passes in a day you were getting it. I would love to go back.

I have experienced the following slopes:

Steamboat - twice - where I learned - incredible (what I think of when I think of Colorado skiing)

Winter Park - twice - ok, nothing spectacular, too many people, too many intersecting runs

Breckenridge - Very nice, excellent snow when I was there.

Vail / Beaver Creek / A-basin / Copper Mtn - Expensive, too many people, although Copper has night skiing, that was different and cool to experience

Sugar Mtn (NC) - lots of snow when we were there, but still very icy, terrible skiing. I would not go back. Pay the extra money and go west to ski.

I am going to give Utah a chance and I also want to go see what Lake Tahoe has to offer and I would never rule out a place like Whistler or the Alps, but if I had to pick a place to go - Steamboat. Its a pain in the arse to get there, but I love that place.

I think Telluride is the coolest town in CO. It's the best ski town, and is even a blast in the summer. Awesome nightlife, great wining/dining.

It's a great ski mountain, but not always consistent snowfall.

You can fly into Montrose, CO, which is only an hour away, but with added expense. I've flown into Alberquerque, NM, and it was only a 3 hour drive or so, if I remember correctly.

All that being said, its expensive as frick in Telluride.

(BTW, I have skied Sun Valley, ID, Snowbird/Alta, UT, and just about every resort in CO (Keystone, Copper, Breck, Vail, Beaver Creek, Steamboat,Winter Park) multiple times.)

To make the trip cheaper you can stay at a VRBO property. Make sure you are in walking distance of the slopes. We stayed at a house in park City that had a hot tub and pool table, and was a block away from the slopes. There was a bus stop 2 blocks away. May want to make your choice based on options of things to do for the non skiers.

We also had food delivered to the house. We ate breakfast at the house, and other meals out.

Hope this helps.

My favorite is Steamboat...I am not I to the glitz and glamour/movie star scene and just really enjoy the small ranch town feel of steamboat. The place is very nice and just has a very cool western vibe going on. Also, best snow I have ever experienced and also has snow mobile tours in the back country, etc...

Copper in Colorado. Laid back, cheaper then vail and others, good mountain for all types.

Really, can't go wrong anyplace out west.

Skiing specifically? Deer Valley in Park City.

Snowboarding as well? Park City Mountain Resort (Vail is taking over management next year).

I'm partial to Park City, if you couldn't tell. Can't beat the snow in Utah.

I'm with you Rouge . You have three different areas in Park City . We have a hard time choosing between the three . I like the Canyons while my wife and kid like Deer and Park City best .
