It's not. But it's the reason people argue for medical marijuana.

Eta: by that I mean that the NORML folks and the Internet message board pundits argue for smoking joints to control pain. It doesn't really make sense to do that. Tell them that THC in pill form will be a good pain reliever to investigate further and they're not nearly as excited. But it's a good shell game.

It does come in pill form- Marinol. It's used as an appetite stimulant. It's inferior to other appetite stimulants, particularly megace I believe, but it does work. I can pull a study or two later if anyone cares to read it and doesn't feel like Google/pub med-Ing the source.

It also gets the patients a little high. Previous marijuana users tolerate it well. People who never partook don't like it because they hate the feeling it gives them (anecdotal).

I don't think it's unreasonable to use it medically. But anyone who prescribes people to smoke it is doing their patients more harm than good, most likely (unnecessary risk). The side effect profile of eating/swallowing/oral formulations really isn't bad at all, aside from some mental slowing (see my first post in the thread). The measured positive effects in comparisons have come up short of alternatives in pretty much all studies that I've seen. It's an OK drug. But there are better ones for just about every indication that also don't get you high. For some people, that makes it an inferior choice. For others, a superior one.

Marinol is not a good pain reliever because THC isn't the primary analgesic compound and because oral cannabis has unpredictable dose lengths and is very tough to titrate.

If you want a refined version that might have actual potential, you're looking at Sativex.
