Getting Fired for Facebook Posts

I have a theory that the vast majority of the world's problems can be solved with five or six simple truths. I'm not sure what all of them are, but one is definitely "There are consequences for your actions."
I was just grabbing a bite to eat at a local place and caught a glimpse of a news story. Not sure what store or where, but a guy was fired from his job at a department store for making a Facebook post along the lines of this:
"When an unarmed black teen is shot by police, then we should shoot a decorated white police officer on his doorstop in front of his family."
Now, whether you believe that or not is not the story. The story is that his employer decided that he was not fit to work for the company if he would make that comment.
Of course he's threatening to sue, his right to free speech was violated, etc. And some attorney is going to take this case and now it seems that he will be able to raise money on a GoFundme page or something. He may be rewarded with a payday that will probably be more than this guy's total lifetime earning potential.
When did we get here as a society?

I'll try to find it. But it was a syndicated package story on a local news station. Saw it on television.

Like someone said in that Nazi/Cop thread yesterday.
If you are going to stand up on the soapbox and throw grenades around like that, don't be surprised when you get the attention you were obviously seeking.
Even if it is from your employer.

Since when is an employee given a right to free speech?

a) The employee should have been smarter and not trash
b) companies should not trouble themselves with what their employees do or say outside of work as long as it doesn't effect their jobs.

This is just an ignorant comment. He should be fired.

for some reason I was under the assumption that an employer can fire an employee at any time or place with no reason or any reason and thats ok.
They might have to pay unemployment checks until they got a job or whatever but it's not illegal.
am i mistaken?

Maybe this guy had a history of saying things like this and he was warned multiple times? Or maybe he had issues in the work place as a result of his controversial opinions. I dont find any reason why he needed to say that anyways even if he thought it. Just seems like he should have kept it to himself. Maybe the employer had other reasons to fire him and that just made it a good time to follow through.

Can't get unemployment if you're fired.

This. But then that would be racist.

The general populace are morans when it comes to the concept of protected speech.
Read up on it your ownselves if you are not familiar. It is not terribly complex.

I'm pretty sure this guy made the post on his personal time. Someone saw it and complained to his employer because he stated that he worked at the store.
