Well dying is a dramatic term, but before tiger it was "dead" to probably 85% of the American public. If it returns to that, some might call it a dead. Sure certain enthusiests and fans may be better off, but when prize money is cut in half and no one is offering golfers seven digits to endorse shite, calling them better off is pretty tough sell.

Considering how fat and obese our country is (most especially the southern parts of our country), you should probably be on board for the promotion of soccer since it actually involves intense cardio and exercise. Golf on the other hand....not as much. Golf isnt void of it, but I would say 95% of golfers cart it up on the course any time they play drinking beer along the way.

I used to live on a very nice golf course. Sold the house about 4 years ago. Thank God. That house is now worth 1/3 less than what I sold it for. Golf is definitely dying.
As others have said, it's expensive. And the younger generation doesn't have the patience or attention span to spend a few hours hitting a small white ball around. It takes a lot of time and patience to get proficient.

It's interesting and I'm sure no correlation, but while the popularity of golf is declining, the popularity of running continues to increase.
I guess the older golfers are dying off and younger people don't have time.

In a word, accessibility. Golf has a steep learning curve and is expensive. If truly "public" (i.e. city) courses were better maintained I think the sport would start to come back.

while being hassled for moving along too slowly. I know that I was turned off by that when I first started playing and I've seen other golfers have to put up with that attitude.

I meant recreational golfers. But I don't think we'll ever have an issue attracting people to participate in professional golf.

Disposable income down ; people don't have the time to get better; takes years to be able to make the shot you wanted to make. Equipment is expensive and marketing has worked in the past but it will be interesting going forward. Green fees will need to be slashed shortly. Golf course expenses are pretty much fixed; if you ten players or 200, same maintence. Golf is a fabulous game and very indicting once you get to a certain level.

Also, to be consistently DECENT at golf, one has to devote an incredible amount of time/effort beyond just a Saturday round with your bros. Hours upon hours monthly have to be spent around a chipping/putting green as well as the range. This is why when you meet someone who consistently shoots in the low 80s or especially high 70s, they do not have ANY other hobbies. Golf is all they can do.
