If you're a boy named Sue, find your dad, and kill the man that gave you awful name.

Where will you be staying? I'm trying to plan a trip for May and always looking for ideas.
I've heard over and over about the trashy/touristy side of things, so I plan to spend most of my time in the mountain areas, but I want to go into town some in the evenings and such.

We stay here every year
You can walk to down town. The village is right down the street. We get cake doughnuts from the Doughnut Frier every morning. There is a bypass road a block over that you can drive to Cosby and the national park and never hit traffic.

Hike the Alum Cave Bluffs trail on the way to newfound gap.
As others have said, Log Cabin pancake house.

Those abandoned cottages are pretty spooky. We were there right around sunset and the shadows gave it a surreal experience.

No matter what you've heard, you will still be shocked. Absolutely shocked.

As for lodging: We used Riverhouse At The Park. Located at the end of the ‘strip,’ on Ski Mountain Road. The ‘cheap’ rooms overlook the creek—the rushing water was loud, having to raise our voices a bit even on our third floor private balcony. Don’t know what the ‘parkside’ rooms are like, which are priced higher.
Obviously an older hotel, but everything works like it should. The place is VERY well maintained. The shower had the highest water flow of any I’ve seen, and there was endless hot water. I’d stay again just for that shower.
One of the advantages is being able to park, then walk most anywhere. Gatlinburg is long on things to do and way short on parking.

Screw these tourist traps. Put the phone away, hit the hiking trails, and enjoy the great outdoors.

We enjoy going to Cade's Cove (we go early when the light is best for photography and thankfully the traffic isn't usually as bad then) and there's plenty of trails in the mountains like Alum Cave trail and Laurel Falls (an easier one with a paved trail of that's what you're into). Newfound Gap Road in general is a scenic drive. Plenty to do in the mountains there.
Eastern TN and western NC is some of the best scenery in the country. If you go and spend your time in pancake shops; you are doing it wrong.

Rent a cabin with a hot tub ... hike during the days, hot tub in the evening, particularly when it's cold outside.
