The "Tepper" "hate" is funny to me, first of all anyone who ever met him knows he was a truly nice guy and worked very hard for LSU. The whole drop LB thing was a disaster and the team lost...but he was not the head coach, ad or a player, his role was maybe 10% of the problem at most. I think much of the hate is in fun, but it was chemistry 101 that broke Dinardo and the Magic tour...start with Denard's suicide, Cecils departure and some poor recrutiting, throw in a split coaching staff and some AD office fall out with GD and you get 98 and 99....oh and the Bootys too, oh my what a mess that was...

Skip won 5 NC in baseball which is arguably the hardest sport to win a NC in due to the number of teams in the tourney. So ima go with Skip.

Now if people do not want to "recognize" track as a legitimate sport that is fine.....but the OP asked "any sport". There is no disputing that Pat Henry is greatest coach at LSU, in any sport.
FWIW....I played baseball at LSU and my son ran track at LSU. He will be the first one to tell you that if you have 2 or 3 stud sprinters on your roster that are healthy once the NCAA preliminary and national meets take place, that the eventual champion is almost predictable. Do you follow college track? These elite sprinters hardly compete all season long. They basically use season meets to train so that they peak at the end of the season. In baseball you need to manage a complete roster 35 man roster for about 70 games. In track, you just need to be able to sign 1 or 2 elite sprinters every year and get them ready for 2 or 3 late season meets. And a baseball coach has to worry about getting his best recruits poached. You really can't even compare what a college track coach does to what a college baseball coach does.

It's Skip. He was the greatest.

Your son ran track and said that? Every D1 team has "stud" sprinters. And they are all within a few hundredths of a second apart. It is very difficult to win nationals with sprinters.
If you look at the 89 national champ team, they only individual champion was in the discus.
If you look at the 90 national champ team, the only individual champion was in the long jump.
On the 2002 team, the individual champs were in the decathlon, long jump, and triple jump (and the 4x100 relay).
So rest assured that Pat is a great coach. And he has continued his success well beyond his days at LSU.

You don't have a clue. You don't win track NC's with jumpers or throwers. Hell, Henry and Shaver doesn't even bother recruiting or developing decathletes. It's nice to have a good middle distance guy but it is tough to pull a 1500/3000 double at the national meet. You win NC's with sprinters and hurdlers who run the 100m, 200m and 4x100m,....or the 400m, 800m and 4x400m. Every once in a while one of those guys is a quality long jumper too.

When is the last time you looked at NCAA meet results? Did Arkansas win all their national championships with sprinters only? And how about Oregon from last year?
Here is Oregon's scoring from their championship last season (note all the points earned by sprinters ... in both the sprints and jumps, because that is so easy to double like that, according to your logic!):
+ 200 (7th)
+ 400 (2nd)
+ 1,500 (1st)
+ 5,000 (2nd, 3rd, 4th for 19 points) (highest scoring event)
+ 10,000 (1st, 5th, and 8th for 15 points) (2nd highest scoring event)
+ 110H (1st)
+ Steeplechase (7th)
+ Hammer (4th)
+ Javelin (1st)
+ Decathlon (3rd)
Events with OU athletes that did not qualify for finals:
+ 800
+ 4x400
+ Long jump
Events where OU did not qualify athletes for nationals:
+ 100
+ 400H
+ 4x100
+ High jump
+ Pole vault
+ Triple jump
+ Shot
+ Discus
