yeah, but that estimate is impossible to determine

serial killers that have been caught killed a lot of people before someone connected the dots and connected the murders

330 million americans, I'd go higher than 100

they have before too...but the guy broke into one of the few MA homes where papa was packing heat

The FBI set up a specific task force just for this very sort of thing.

They do believe that the job, in part, attracts a personality type that is bent towards serial killing, and they have some pretty good evidence that it is something of a problem.

I'm inclined to agree...was trying to be conservative in my estimate. It is probably in the hundreds.

Also probably depends on how one defines "serial killer". I am sure there are contract killers for cartels and the like that have dozens of bodies to their names...not sure how to define examples similar to that.

they made a really awful movie "suspect zero" about the idea...movie sucked, but the thought is frightening

but I'd imagine you'd have to be improvisational and impulsive, which would increase the chances of getting caught.

personally, I think of them as people who compulsively murder several people over a period of time...without any traceable motive.

I don't think of hit men as serial killers...they're motivated by money. Killers who need to kill to satisfy an addiction really

There are many running around right now in ghettos across the country. These murders are just labelled gang violence.

They're just deranged killers who have found a way to capitalize on their blood lust. I mean, look at Aaron Hernandez. I'm not sure if he qualifies as a serial killer (yet) but he certainly wasn't motivated by the money if the allegations against him are true.

That's just it, though - I'd bet a fair amount of folks who get into that business as a career are actual factual serial killers who now have a cover and professional license for their impulses.

yeah but I think the "official definition" involves a cooling down period.

it is driven by compulsion and some people who profited from murder were serial killers...h.h. holmes for example

I don't know if Hernandez is a serial killer so much as a psychopathic gang banger.

He was motivated by anger...dude had disrespected him. he isn't driven to murder by a compulsion to kill, at least we don't suspect that he is.

it's pretty rare for a serial murderer to not be driven by sexual desires

it's quite possible...there's so much we don't understand and never will...but everyone can understand killing for money, hatred, revenge, etc.

that's why serial killers are hard to find even when their existence has been identified...most murderers kill people they know with an identifiable motive. over 95% I think, something crazy

Imagine walking into Jeffery dahmer's apartment or finding the Ortega family in witchita...there's no understandable motive.

As there are typically up to 50 serial killers active in the US at any time, there are plenty that will go unsolved. However, there may not be as many as high profile as Zodiac or Jack the Ripper.

exactly, because something so public, so daring, taunting and high profile is sure to be solved with DNA, fingerprints, and all the crazy fricking techniques available to us now...not to mention that we have a more sophisticated infrastructure where things get traced back.

you've essentially eliminated their biggest barrier to catching you...knowing you exist.

Isn't there currently a string of unsolved murders near Jennings?

But five days prior, during a trip to Boca Raton's Town Center mall on Dec. 12, 2007, mall security found her and her mother, Nancy Bochicchio, 47, just before midnight, dead in the Sears parking lot in a still-idling Chrysler Aspen SUV. Their killer remains on the loose.

Six years to the day later, it's still tough for Nancy Bochicchio's sister, JoAnn Bruno, to talk about her sister and niece without crying. In a phone call Wednesday, she described how it seems as if the case is slipping away and getting colder each year.

The murders at the mall in Boca Raton gained national attention after being featured on shows, including "America's Most Wanted" and "Dateline."

Aside from the Bochicchio murders, on March 23, 2007, someone killed Randi Gorenberg, 52, of Boca Raton, after she left the Town Center mall.

Sheriff's Office investigators said she was shot and dumped at a park in West Delray Beach. Her murder also remains unsolved.

Not only this, but the term "serial" gives you an insight into what would qualify. Serial as in one (or the next) in a number of related items.

this was a sick guy...there's a documentary on Netflix about him.

Gang bangers don't really discriminate whereas serial killers do. Someone has to fit the type (see Ted Bundy's victims) or it would fall more into the mass murder category (gang bangers).

while not a part of a group of murders, Jon Benet Ramsey is still technically unsolved. Most believe it to be one of the parents but the evidence was not there.
