Which is correct? One space or two spaces to start a new sentence?

I have older employees that insist you're supposed to put two spaces after a period to start a new sentence.

Two spaces was taught in typing classes, but it probably doesn't matter any more.

currently it is mandatory to use one space while writing my thesis. Therefore, I'll take that as correct.

Use one space.
Two spaces was a thing necessary on typewriters.

I think that's a perfectly valid conclusion Ham.

Cuts down on the total space you can eat up.

I'm shooting to keep it as short and to the point as possible while throwing diagrams everywhere.

Two spaces I believe is how a lot of schools taught it, but it seems to be an antiquated style nowadays that some people still do just because it's how they were taught.

That's way too long to read. Cliffs please?

Basically,
- Modern Language Association (MLA) handbook says one space
- Chicago style handbook says one space
- Typographers agree on one space
- The reason why some people think two spaces is necessary is because typewriters used monospaced fonts
- Modern computers use proportional fonts where the area of a space between the period and the beginning of the next sentence is already correct
