Buying a vehicle in Texas

I know this topic has been talked about a few times on the OB. Can someone give me the pros and cons? Taxes? Is it worth it?

Get the quote from Texas and bring it to a dealership around you.
Use that as leverage

Used? I've done it twice. Just pay taxes when you go to register it. Pretty easy process, and the prices in TX make it worth it

I live in La and bought my last PU new in Houston. La car dealers can't compete with Houston prices and I saved several thousand versus the lowest price I could get in La. Plane fare was only $120 and the dealer picked me up at the airport. I made thye deal over the phone.
Dealer had the paper work and the vehicle (with temporary Lic)ready and I was driving home in a couple hours. Took the paperwork to a TTL office in LA and paid La taxes, title, and Lic fee. Didn't have to pay any Tx fees. It was very simple.

That's my biggest question. What will I have to pay when I get back to La? I have a permeant Purple Heart lic plate. So it will just go on the new truck. The prices in Texas are far better then any dealership in La. Thanks

Alx, what dealer do you use?

You pay registration when you register it here

Many dealerships, especially in Dallas/Houston can fill out all your LA paperwork and save you a trip to the DMV. If you're buying from a really large dealership, ask them if they'll deliver. When I bought my wife's car in Dallas, they didn't come down on the price, but they delivered the car on a trailer to my driveway, so that was worth the $1,000 we were apart.
I got the $1,000 back 3 days later when somebody didn't realize the car was sold and they reduced the price. I called my salesman and they cut me a check.

If you're buying Chevy, I recommend Mac Haik

Mac Haik.
And to answer the tax question above, you owe La. the difference between what you paid in Tx. taxes and what you would owe had you bought it in La. The big places like Haik take care of that for you.

Same experience here. Bought a couple tacomas at Tejas in Humble Tx just north of Houston. Asked what our tax rate was where we lived and did everything for us. Nothing to it. I have to say though, I finally got a connection locally and bought local last time for the first time ever and the service has been excellent. Treated completely different. If I call ahead for even an oil change, they offer me a loaner bc they know I'm usually busy. Dropped mine off yesterday and they had to get a part out of Houston. No loaners on the lot so they brought me to enterprise and rented me one.

One of the best benefits of living out of city limits...Dad used to buy his trucks at Wickersham Ford in Orange...and we only had to pay Calcasieu Parish taxes, not Lake Charles city tax or Sulphur city tax. It was like 3-4% difference. If the dealer was in those city limits...you had to pay those sale tax rates.
Even though I live in Alabama...I'm considering buying my next truck in either Houston or Beaumont area. For all the reasons already in this thread. Unless the Bama dealers can get right on the price and trade-in values on both my trucks I plan on trading in.

They shouldn't have charged you for tax rate where you didn't live? Even buying local, they always ask me if I'm in or out of city.

quote:I am actually related to one of our dealer families and I cannot get a deal. I may stop trying altogether. The advertised price of my wife's Explorer at Haik was over $3,000 less than what I got as Hixon's bottom dollar.

Purchased my truck yesterday from Baytown ford. 2014 F150 platinum. After all the rebates got a little over $12000 off of the truck. I think it was worth driving to Texas. Thanks for the help.
