I don't think the cop was that opposed to a bribe to begin with, for him to take it so easily/quickly.

A million dollars back in 1952 in a small town in florida? He might as well have said I'll give you a trillion dollars. Money changes people. And as rich and affluent as a family as he comes from, the police would certainly have known who he was and how much he had.

It's just the nature of the show. It's fun because it's far fetched and unpredictable. I've accepted alien abductions and ghost rape in this show. I can accept a cop taking a bribe from a psychopath.
