re: Columbia Law Students Affected by the Garner Decision to Postpone Finals

I once had a hearing in Greenville, Texas. I was visiting with a group of lawyers. One of the lawyers, who was from Houston, started talking about a terrible car accident where the Houston lawyer and his three young children were killed. He said the name of the lawyer, and it was one of my law school roommates. I had to regroup and go forward with the hearing.
These kids are going to be weak (if they delay their final).
Damn. That's terrible. You're right, though.

There are 8,000 to 9,000 African-Americans killed each year -- 93 percent of them by African-Americans. Using the number 8,500, that translated to 21.65 blacks murdered each day by other blacks.

My god. What a crock of shite.

How the hell did Garner and Brown become the most prominent racial "injustices" in this country?
Neither is a case of any national importance.
Cop killings of black men are a drop in the bucket when you look at national murder statistics by race.
Both "victims" fought with the cops and had criminal issues.
Blacks get screwed by the justice system. One guy locally spent twenty years in Angola for a rape that he clearly did not commit. He had no criminal record. He did not do anything to provoke his fate (e.g. fight with the police).
I am far more concerned with these types of injustices - where a black man with no prior involvement in the criminal justice system gets shafted - than cases where someone fights with the cops.

It's pretty well known that final exams and grades for that matter are nearly irrelevant in the ivy league law schools.
Also,
THIS. Every single bit of this. I cannot think of a single excuse as to why a student would need extra time on a law school exam that would not also come up in practice and hinder them in some way. If you cannot read an exam and take it in 4 hours just like everyone else then maybe law is not the field for you.
Also,

It's like the people who need extra time on exams for pussy reasons. Good look finding a job at a law firm that will let you turn in a motion late because you have ADD, or you were 'stressed,' etc

At LSU, I think they would get two extra hours on a 4 hour exam.

I'd love to file a motion locally asking for an extension of time because I'm upset by the Garner and Brown grand jury decisions.
They would laugh me out of town.

Around here, they would report you to the ODC.

That is still the case. It pisses me off every time. There are some exams where 2 extra hours doesn't really matter, but there are some where every minute is important. The thing is, those exams are designed to test your ability to read a fact pattern, filter out the bullshite and talk about the relevant issues. If you give someone 2 extra hours to do that exam the entire purpose of the exam is defeated.

It gives you a serious advantage at LSU where 80% of the classes have final where the test is just an outline dump.

The ADD extra time thing is such bullshite.

Right. You have professors like church who give you a point for every relevant thing you mention. Someone with 2 extra hours is surely going to be able to talk about more issues and thus get more points. Luckily, the people that get the extra time are generally no where near the top of the class, and the extra time is likely the only thing keeping their head above water.

I should have tried this excuse on Bockrath.

Even if these kids are using it as an excuse to delay finals, they are doing it at the expense of their reputation. Pretty dumb, imo.
agreed, i feel like if Yale or Harvard had a school shooting on campus the week before they still wouldnt push the dates
