It's happened multiple times in the AFC. Why don't they just get rid of divisions?

It's only happened twice ever, the '85 Broncos and the '08 Patriots.

And if they got rid of divisions, they'd have to redo the entire scheduling format since teams play divison rivals twice each currently.
The better way would be to just implement an over .500 rule. If you don't finish at least 9-7, even if you lead your division, you drop into the wildcard pool. If only three division winners get in, you seed the top wild card team #4. Much simpler, they could even drop the minimum record to 8-8 if they had to.
