If you're younger than 25, the marriage is more than likely doomed to begin with. JS. Prenup. Counseling. Credit checks. Jobs with security. Banking statements. Debts. Parenting types. Family history-did she or you come from broken family? All need to be done/out in the open before putting shite on her finger. Youre welcome.

Prenup
Being considered. My family wants to protect our land, her family wants to protect their wealth

Counseling
We undoubtedly will do this through a program at our church.

Credit checks
My credit is mediocre, but with zero debt. Hers is stellar.

Banking statements
seperate checking with a joint account for paying bills, joint savings, and seperate retirement accounts

zero

Parenting types
In agreement on most things. Still debating public vs private schools, but that has more to do with where we live than anything. The other disagreement is regarding whether or not spanking should be allowed. I am pro spanking for particularly heinous offenses (kind of a punishment of last resort), she is anti on all counts. Both agree on everything else with parenting.

No

The setting was actually the easiest part. It's the stone that makes you work. I can't help you with gemstones like ruby or sapphire, but if you go diamond, check back in.
I have picked out a few settings that I'm fairly certain she'll like (I'll be running them by her mother before I buy one of them). For the one I most like, it would be a .8 carat round stone. You told me to check back in, so that's what I'm doing. Any help you could offer would be much appreciated!

get this squared away before you put a ring on her...finances and shite can be discussed and you can usually meet in the middle...but disciplining your kids is very important...if you have boys...you will NEED to be able to spank...
I did a multi stone deal that equals a carat....basically each little diamond is a 1/4..they are set so that it looks like one big one from a distance...she loves it...and it cost a fraction of what a solid carat diamond will cost...

May want to look into Rose Gold

Paying retail.

Jackpot. Look for family heirlooms that have been pawned for drug money and haggle down 25% or more on what the shop owner has it priced at.

She may be interested in alternative gemstones (like sapphire).
IT'S A TRAP. Get her a sapphire ring for her next birthday or something.

How much money are you willing to light on fire to appease this girl before it really starts pissing you off?

If you are going Vintage then definitely rock some pawn shops and see if you can pick up something stellar.
Spend the money on a quality diamond, bands are changeable. Some people are a bit freaked out but check out diamonds online (JamesAllen lets you look at the individual diamonds themselves). You will save mad cash (as in thousands of dollars for a comparable ring) and can get a much nicer ring for the price if you do it online. You need to know exactly what you want though if you go the online route.
Things to consider: What kind of shape does she want? (Usually its either round or princess)
From there make sure you get an ideal cut diamond (shite will sparkle way more, and girls love that sparkly shite)
After that carrot and colour. Obviously you want a solid carrot diamond ring but don't just get something huge that looks terrible. Colour is a bigger deal if you have other diamonds set around it but anything near colourless will be fine.
If you do it online clarity will not be much of an issue as you can see individual inclusions in each diamond so just pick the one you want.
You have to figure out your own price range and go from there.

Buy her a new dishwasher and a washer/dryer set. If she says no to that she is not wife material.
If you are an OT baller throw in a new vacuume cleaner as well.

This is actually not terrible advice you just have to be sure of what you are buying.

Spend 4-5k. Get a "sparklier" diamond over a larger one.
If she is upset about it, that will tell you a lot.

Any pawn shops in Baton Rouge that are worth checking out?

I don't know, don't live there. I imagine the BR ones are pretty rough. I would definitely have a professional inspect anything before you buy one. Also check out estate sales. Lot's of antique rings and jewelry get sold off in them.

for the jacked up prices, i agree, but when i picked up the stone, i went to jared and they price matched one i picked out from a local seller that had similar grade. the one from them was slightly beter graded actually.
people love to shite on the big names, but if you do your homework, you wont get ripped off. spend what you are comfortable spending. if you can afford a 10-15k ring and you are comfortbale doing so, do it. if you cant, dont.

get a girl friend or a sister to see if they ever have talked about rings and get preference. Or hell you can even go looking with each other (unless its a total surprise)
Clarity, carat, and cut know these.
