Home Theater Receivers - Onkyo having difficulties of late

FYI for those looking into buying a home theater receiver, particularly on the upper end with the better bells and whistles.
Onkyo has acknowledged quality control issues on many of their receivers and are dealing with repairs/replacements and have actually extended their warranties in response to the number of failed units.
I've never owned an Onkyo but was considering one for my next purchase while also considering the alternative of separate preamp/processor and amplifier combo, not to mention other receivers.
My habit of over-researching came across the following link that discusses the problems at length. Add to it that Onkyo has dumped the Audyssey feature that allows for a fairly good room calibration of your audio system in favor of less than impressive knockoff feature. Reason for this appears to be driven by the Onkyo processor's inability to handle the workload and the company's unwillingness to add a dual core processor to make it a non-issue as other manufacturers have done.
This is fairly frustrating because Onkyo does have a couple of options with the latest and greatest HDMI "standard" for 4k video pass-through that some of the others do not.

Be sure to do your homework before pulling the trigger on these.

i have an onkyo that was purchased in 1999 and it has performed flawless every day. i'd like a newer one with better features but can't justify it b/c this onkyo has been perfect..

I've heard about the trouble with Onkyo before but this is the first I'm hearing about dumping Audyssey. What a stupid move! My Onkyo is a couple years old and I've never had a problem. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Yeah, the folks on the AVSforum think this was the most illogical move they could have made. It was presumably a cost saving measure but when all of your competition can handle it and you're the outlier, there's probably going to be people jumping off your bandwagon. This coupled with the recent quality control issues and I'd say Onkyo suddenly has major problems on their hands when just a couple of years ago they seemed to be one of the best companies around that appealed to the average consumer and mid-high end as well.
And for the record I have a Sony ES receiver that I've been waiting to crap out for many years now and it simply hasn't. I bought it in 2000 and it has worked flawlessly. But at this point I need HDMI support and I would like to utilize the TrueHD and DTS-MA tracks on Bluray discs, among other things. I would like to upgrade my power output as well as my speakers can handle 6x the amount that my Sony can put out.

never had an Onkyo receiver. I have had two tpo end Harman Kardon receivers that have been rock solid, and very stylish as well for that matter.

I was looking online over the weekend at some new ones and I was noticing most dont have this feature and was wondering this myself. Its one of the main reasons I was looking at another Onkyo.

I'm fairly certain I read that Onkyo resolved those issues. I got a 636 and have had Zero issues. I bought mine new though, not refirb

I have had two and love them- I would advise you to add an auxillary fan

One concern that I have is the lack of HDCP 2.2 in the new receivers even those with HDMI 2.0.

There are several threads on AVSForum regarding it but until they finalize that standard, I am waiting. I was planning on getting a new receiver this Christmas and a 4k TV next year but I will just have to wait.

I have an Onkyo with the HDMI issue. Cant go full 1080P without it freaking out every ten minutes. I made it my second zone receiver and replace with a pioneer. Never getting another onkyo. However, my onkyo sub from 1996 is still rocking.
