re: Questions on Central Private School
Posted by The Big Spliff on 2/8/15 at 6:14 pm
Um, no. Spare me the lecture on a topic that you know nothing about. My daughter has a chronic genetic immune deficiency. The school systems we approached refused to understand the condition, despite our best efforts to inform them. We tried to conference in her specialists. All we wanted was notice when a flu, or strep, or any other significant illness was going around. Nope...they wouldn't budge. The time we spent dealing with the public schools on such a simple request was ridiculous. It simply isn't worth going through that over and over again. Not when the private schools have been overwhelmingly accommodating in comparison.
Questions on Central Private School
Posted by The Big Spliff on 2/8/15 at 4:32 pm
We're fairly new to the area and need some info regarding Central Private.
My daughter, for a variety of reasons, typically does much better in a private school setting compared to a public school setting. We have found that even with the best of public school districts, the sheer size of the school (even if the class size is reasonable) is enough to make her extremely uncomfortable to the point of intolerable. It is something we have tried to work through with outside counseling, etc with really no progress.
I know Central Private holds some less than desirable reputation in its early days. I'm not so interested in this. I am more focused on today. What is the current state of Central Private - the politics within the school, the interaction between teachers and students, teachers and parents, administration and teachers, administration and parents, etc. How are the academics compared to other relative private and even public schools?
Another consideration that we have is that my daughter has a very rare medical condition. In our experience, even though public schools are legally required to provide accommodations for our daughter (which by the way are not all that involved), the private schools seem much easier to deal with. So this is another reason we are looking into Central Private.
So any insight anyone can give about the school will be helpful. We're also aware that rumors have been around for years that the school may close and isn't viable long term. I'm not sure if that's just talk or real. If we start her there, we'd like to be there long term.
Thanks.

I may be way behind on this, but oh well:
Oklahoma: Bob Stoops has issued the official announcement and has clarified that Mike Stoops has lost the defensive coordinator title and is now co-defensive coordinator (side by side) with Jerry Montgomery. Interesting.

Difference between DD5.1/DTS and Dolby TrueHD/DTS-MA
Posted by The Big Spliff on 12/22/14 at 7:56 am
I'm curious to know from those who have done a side by side comparison how improved the audio soundtracks are on movies with the Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio formats compared to the older/compressed DD5.1/DTS formats.
I'm looking to upgrade my receiver or add a processor and use my current receiver simply as an amplifier but want to make sure this is worth the expense.

It's been a decade since you've gotten new sheets. Time to go shopping my friend.

For crying out loud - when did shopping for bed sheets become this complicated? There's a million different types, styles, brands, material blends, etc. to choose from. I thought this was going to be a slam dunk, but apparently this is just another setup for ole Spliff to fail hard at.
And I learned quickly not to read reviews on amazon, etc. Half the reviews people love the product and the other half hate it. it's like tigerdroppings' membership has reviewed every bed sheet ever made.

I've heard about the trouble with Onkyo before but this is the first I'm hearing about dumping Audyssey. What a stupid move! My Onkyo is a couple years old and I've never had a problem.
Yeah, the folks on the AVSforum think this was the most illogical move they could have made. It was presumably a cost saving measure but when all of your competition can handle it and you're the outlier, there's probably going to be people jumping off your bandwagon. This coupled with the recent quality control issues and I'd say Onkyo suddenly has major problems on their hands when just a couple of years ago they seemed to be one of the best companies around that appealed to the average consumer and mid-high end as well.
And for the record I have a Sony ES receiver that I've been waiting to crap out for many years now and it simply hasn't. I bought it in 2000 and it has worked flawlessly. But at this point I need HDMI support and I would like to utilize the TrueHD and DTS-MA tracks on Bluray discs, among other things. I would like to upgrade my power output as well as my speakers can handle 6x the amount that my Sony can put out.
Home Theater Receivers - Onkyo having difficulties of late
Posted by The Big Spliff on 12/3/14 at 1:24 pm
FYI for those looking into buying a home theater receiver, particularly on the upper end with the better bells and whistles.
Onkyo has acknowledged quality control issues on many of their receivers and are dealing with repairs/replacements and have actually extended their warranties in response to the number of failed units.
I've never owned an Onkyo but was considering one for my next purchase while also considering the alternative of separate preamp/processor and amplifier combo, not to mention other receivers.
My habit of over-researching came across the following link that discusses the problems at length. Add to it that Onkyo has dumped the Audyssey feature that allows for a fairly good room calibration of your audio system in favor of less than impressive knockoff feature. Reason for this appears to be driven by the Onkyo processor's inability to handle the workload and the company's unwillingness to add a dual core processor to make it a non-issue as other manufacturers have done.
This is fairly frustrating because Onkyo does have a couple of options with the latest and greatest HDMI "standard" for 4k video pass-through that some of the others do not.

Be sure to do your homework before pulling the trigger on these.

re: Any good places around BR for cooked hams for thanksgiving?
Posted by The Big Spliff on 11/20/14 at 10:20 am
apparently Days Smokehouse in Watson does pecan smoked honey glazed hams 8-10 lbs for $43.99. I'm in that area a good bit so that sounds like a good option. They require prepayment over the phone or in the store with pickup on Wednesday. Looks like I answered my own question. Thanks Spliff!
Any good places around BR for cooked hams for thanksgiving?
Posted by The Big Spliff on 11/20/14 at 9:21 am
we've got turkey and a ton of other stuff going at the house this thanksgiving but the wife wants ham as well and I just don't see us having the time and space to prepare it in time.
Any suggestions for getting a quality one already prepared? We can plan to pick it up the day before or morning of (preferred of course if at all remotely possible).

re: What do some of you not understand about Brandon Harris??
Posted by The Big Spliff on 11/20/14 at 8:32 am
STRIPES...answers me one simple thing....
if it is not ok to trot out Harris who is "not ready" and apparently not effective and can presumably be ruined (which is simply a knee jerk reaction to what happened to a totally different team back in 2008 so I don't think this is a valid issue anyway and simple paranoia) why is it so ok to trot out Jennings to get embarrassed by his poor performance week in and week out? Is it ok for him to be ruined but not Harris simply because Jennings supposedly knows the offense? Why is Jennings viewed to be immune to the same mental capacity breakdown?? Ever heard of consistency?
Why the hell should any of this make a difference? Results matter and if the results are relatively the same, why not allow it be a true rotation and true competition and allow both to potentially develop game experience?
Obviously Jennings isn't progressing after 2 years in the system and a full year under his belt, but according to you let's go ahead and allow him to potentially be ruined but protect the shite out of Harris. How does that make sense? Why on earth would you have such opposing philosophies for two guys who play the same position, performing at the same level?? That question can be posed to you and to the staff.
