I think the A-10 is a cool weapon but how is congress qualified to tell the Air Force what planes it needs??

The army is keeping its A-10's, right? And the army is the branch of service which knows when and where it will need close air support for its troops.

Bad move by congress, IMO.

USAF never let them have any - they can veto any fixed-wing combat aircraft the army wants to fly.

ETA: Russian - the solution is to let the Army fly A-10s. The USAF's ego will not let that happen (or has prevented it for almost 2 decades now) - USAF has tried to dump the platform on several occasions.

They belong to the USAF. All of them.

If they aren't needed why are they being deployed to Iraq?

As I understand it, generals revert back to children once they get stars in that they love to play with new toys. I think this is more of Congress telling them that they need to keep playing with the toys they already have. Of course, Ron Barbour's constituency has a vested interest in the survival of the A-10 at DMAFB.
