My 2 cents:
1. Good for you for helping the family out. You made an impression on this guy's kids that no parent can ever teach.
2. I question whether I would be able to do the same thing. For one, I know nothing about brake lines and how to fix them so I wouldn't be much help. But, more importantly, when the guy said they were out of money and waiting for someone to wire him my gut reaction is that he's just looking for hand-outs. I live in Chicago and the amount of panhandlers and "stories" that I have heard have made be jaded about anyone asking for hand-outs.
3. I am for one, glad that you posted this. I will be looking for how I can pay something forward (and not the Starbucks kind) during this Christmas season.
