Is it a cliche to have arguments with your in-laws at Thanksgiving over stuff like politics, family issues, etc.?

She would make you eat outside if you did.

It's pretty trashy imo. Shows the person hosting you at their house a complete lack of respect. Just makes others feel awkward and uncomfortable. Really, what good does it do? Just enjoy a dinner with loved ones and just don't engage in such discussion.

It's the "He Said / She Said" gossip of family business that gets me the most.
Just wondering if anyone else ever sees that kind of BS at the Holidays.

When I was about 10, was getting a haircut one day and mentioned to the barber about how much he talked while cutting hair. He said "yeah, I'll talk about anything - except politics and religion. I lose too many customers that way".
Just one of the tidbits of knowledge that I have held on to.

We all agreed to keep the convo light this year. Currently taking bets on the Purina dog show.

Turned down an invite to the in-laws. They're all gumps and I didn't want to watch LSU play over there. They root against them.

That is why I avoid the women side of the house. We usually have the men either sitting around the tv watching football or outdoor channel if football is not on yet. We either talk about hunting, football or farming (
).

I stay out of all family drama at the in-laws, drink a beer and sit quietly, grateful that none of those problems concern me, nor am I expected to contribute.
It's amusing to me how much of a family past time it is to talk about other family members. My peeps don't do that. If we are talking shite about a family member, it's usually the one sitting across the table.

I just laugh up here. I'm from a really relaxed family in nowhere Louisiana. These people are up in miserable New Jersey planning this 6 course meal with crystal stemware. I said "we use paper plates and plastic forks". Mother in law said "for a holiday?!?!" I just responded with "enjoy cleaning all those dishes and putting them back where they came from". Which they were individually wrapped and out in a box then went in some cabinet I've never even seen.
She also just told me to make sure all my valuables were hidden because evidently there's a cousin coming over who will jack anything. She start rifling through my shite she gonna be in a bind.

My in-laws are pretty cool.
ETA: over here right now
Arguing can be fun.

Used to but seemed to have grown out of it.

I thought I did too.
I have a one year old and the one thing that pisses me off most is hearing, "Children should be raised by doing (insert comment here)" or "We raised all our children this way and look how they turned out".
It's very difficult to nod and smile.
I love my wife and I try to do just that; nod and freakin' smile...

Well, I say that but it wouldn't surprise me at all for it to happen again.
Yep.
