Following up on Ace's post.
I always shoot the magazine of carry ammo first at the range. Just to put fresh in it when I'm done. I've also heard stories about bullets being pushed back into the brass from cycling too much. probably nothing to it but you never know. The first shot should be good every time. No use in messing around with that.

This is called bullet setback. If there is a round that doesn't have a tight enough crimp, this is a real possibility. The action of a pistol is violent and forceful enough to drive that bullet back into the case.
I try to change my carry ammo batch about every year. And after I'm done at the range (when the JHPs are not in the mags) I usually take the best looking round and put it on top. I try to make sure I rotate them enough to prevent bullet setback. Plus I try to change my carry batch every year. Being subjected to hot and cold back and forth time and time again makes me uneasy about my ammo even though I probably have nothing to worry about, so I shoot it out after a while. Better safe than sorry.

We'd probably agree on a lot of things, Bap - except that whole "birdshot as a defense round" thing.

Revolvers don't go out of battery.....

Wilson would have needed 2 revolvers during the incident, DS.

That's an extreme stretch. He may have only needed one shot had it gone off when he asked it to. The scenario could have been drastically different.

I guess we'll just disagree on that one thing then.

I don't care what anybody says. Birdshot is a great defensive round, for birds.

Yeah a .357 at close range would have been much better than a .40.
And don't get me wrong there, I carry a 40.

Gotta watch out for those attacking birds. The saggy pants really doesn't affect their flight like it does affect humans walking and running.

Why they don't release all the details, I'll never understand. What did the other witnesses say? did Brown have powder residue on his hands and clothes?
All very good questions and you can find the answers on the 'net. The MO DA has released to the public ALL the testimony and information the Grand Jury looked at. The testimony by itself is >1000 pgs. I've not taken the time to review the info, but here's a tip: according to Mayor Giuliani, Witness #10 provided the most useful testimony and largely corroborated Officer Wilson's version of events.

Any semi automatic pistol will not fire out of battery. The slide has to be all the way forward or the trigger will pull and the weapon won't fire. It's not specific to any manufacturer. Geez.

Here's a link that takes you to ALL the documents released from the investigation. Documents of Investigation of the Ferguson Case

Correct. The slide was pushed back and out of battery. Thus no firing pin contact on the primer. No gun would have fired in this position. In fact, being the sig it actually saved his life by giving him the ability to pull the trigger in double action until the slide was forward and the round in battery.
Lot of tars up in this thread too.

Glock lovers, your shite need not apply. It's SAO and won't "click" twice without racking it. Lawd only knows what would have happened when the 3rd "click" was needed.

Going thru 3rd childhood with my toys. memory is waning. A very detailed comprehensive list of reminders to self.
1. shoot my concealed carry ammo out occasionally, or, at least top round.
2. Barney's old wheeled 38 would have been much more effective in this hth scenario, than my or anybody's pretty semi's.
3. this board has corrupted me, made me spend money on guns I don't need. I read my posts from when this board 1st started and I preached wheel guns, now yall have me loaded up with high dollar pistols and evil black looking rifles.(the couple that survived my many boating accidents).
4. fire sale @ the geauxt pen, I'm selling all my pretty stuff and investing in a more profitable venture, cake baking and decorating.

The slide was probably out of battery. The procedure for a failure to fire is to slap magazine, rack the pistol and fire. Some teach to observe the slide and slap forward to put it back into battery. I prefer a very expedient slap rack and squeeze because its repeatable and doesnt require any real analysis.
This guy is pretty fortunate that he eventually went through his immediate action procedures, but immediate action is not ssomething a gun owner should ever hesitate to do.
pistol slides out of battery is a common malfunction, especially after a scuffle or if a person has been crawling around or bumping against stuff. This really doesnt reflect poorly on the sig at all, as many of the more popular firearms can suffer from the same malfunction for a variety of reasons. Ive necer never been a sig fan, but not for this reason.
Bottom line is that Brown hasn't put in enough reps on immediate action, which is something that can be rehearsed dry in your living room in front of the tv.
