Was today. Got invited last minute to hunt on a buddies lease. He's been limiting out every hunt. Well its drizzling at the launch. He tells me we may have issues. Wtf? Rain, wind, front, what else could you ask for???? He then tells me there's a leak somewhere on his engine when it rains and it gets into the carborator. Well we running down the canal at a brisk 10 mph. Get to his pond entrance and the first 50 yards is covered in hyacinth. Boat didn't have enough power to push through it so I had to rip lilies in front of the boat so we could move. Easily took 45 min. Things we do for ducks. We see ducks everywhere before we even can get set up. We finally set up and my buddy shoots a bluewing and its banded. I've yet to shoot a banded bird. Right after that the wind shifts and and the hyacinth is headed towards us. It grabs all the dekes and so we had to grab them before we lost them in that crap. Set up on the other side. I imediately shoot a blue wing. Well we wait to get it because it landed in the far side of the pond and my buddy didnt want to send the dog. Five minutes later a 4' alligator comes up and eats my bird. I've had it. we are soaked, missed the prime time shoot with the lilies. We decide to head in. Takes us another hour to push through the hyacinth just to get out. Back at the launch everyone we talked to limited out. Till next time!

I don't see anything about sinking a boat before daylight when there is ice floating on top of the water. Keep hunting you haven't hit bottom yet...

Nothing worse than a bunk hunt
Posted on 11/23/14 at 8:51 pm to lsuson
that doesn't sound like a fun hunt, but believe me, it can get a hell of a lot worse...
when things go wrong on a duck hunt, it can get bad in a damn hurry...

no, there is everything from wading in flooded timber to 4 wheelers in flooded fields to boating in marsh or lake...all forms of terrain and all forms of transportation...

This. If something didn't get broke that costs a shite ton of money to fix, stranded in BFE, some type of near death experience occurred, or the old lady left you, it's a walk in the park hunt.

I didn't say it was the worst. I went hunting in venice one time and somehow got convinced to take a guy that's never been in a pirogue before hunting with me. Well we get in the pirogue, I tell him to stay still and not move even if you think it's going to flip. Well I start paddling and we are in a 6' deep canal. You guess what happens. Took about 20 minutes to find my gun. Water temp was also in the 40's. This was back in the 90's. Air temp was in the low 30's that day. Froze my arse off. Still hunted that morning, but I was miserable.
Another hunt, I want to stay in the blind, but my buddy is antsy to go to the camp. I tell him take my boat and pick me up in a couple hours. Well he ends up running my boat into a channel marker focking up the front end pretty bad. The boat is leaking. He comes back to get me and I'm like WTF happened to my boat. He came up with some lame arse excuse that a crew boat swamped him.
Are those better stories???

It didn't involve one or more of the following
1. Coast guard rescue
2. Coroner
3. Emergency room trip
4. Law enforcement involvement
5. Coming back with less passenger than trip started with...
Everything else is window dressing....

The first dog I ever "trained" was my first golden retriever, and I was a very young teenager. This training normally involved me smacking him until he did what I wanted him to do. Thankfully now I know better.
Anyways, we were in Bogue Chitto one morning in a 14ft rogue. There were 5 of us total, and it was his first hunt. I had the dog, guns, and some dekes in my rogue, and the other two had two dudes a piece and some gear. It was like late December/early January, freezing arse cold, and we're paddling through this area we called Page Lake. Being the proud 13 year old that I was, I had been talking up my "badass dog" for weeks. Well, we came around a corner and jumped like 4 woodies or something...I honestly can't remember what set him off. Dog went nuts, jumped out of the pirogue, I flipped, and all of the guns went to the bottom of the canal (~8ft deep). It took me forever to find everyone's guns. We still hunted and didn't kill shite. I froze. Needless to say, that dog never jumped out of a pirogue again after that day.
eta: still not my worst, either.

I've been duck hunting for 30 years now. Guess I've been luckier than others as far as bad luck
