Michaels just told stern he called it. I just looked it up and posted the story

I'm not sure what impression he gave on Stern, but I can see "call" fitting. It sounds like he called the fight as in ended it, not called the fight as in play by play.

regardless if he called the actual fight or called the end of the fight, that is hilarious.

The craziest part of this story is that he had a female limo driver.

This is part of a long magazine article by Michaels, Esquire I believe, and the whole article is a slam on Howard. Seems he really was the obnoxius arse he was always protrayed to be by the media.

al michaels was putting it as nicely as he could (and as much as I don't enjoy him on SNF, I really do enjoy him when he's on the stern show and I think he's an amazing broadcast talent) that cossell was an enormous cocksucker
seemed kind of torn about the guy. Great character and amazing stories, but a real piece of fricking work
it sounded more like frustration and annoyance than anything
then with cossell, you must also consider the professional jealousy people felt because of him

He should have gotten out with a video camera and started yelling WHIRL-SSSTTAAAAAARRRRR instead of breaking it up.

he seemed to infer this was the "black" part of town which makes it all the more funny
can you imagine a drunken world famous broadcaster with a shitty toupee, a yellow blazer and a cigar stepping out of a limousine in the shitty part of Kansas city to "call" a fight between teenagers (teenagers that probably could've beaten the shite out of him and michaels)

Al Michaels is the best in the business. I need to pick up his book.

he's certainly of another era...I could listen to him talk about a "totally farcical" phone call all day
"a looky heya, I see him and he look scared"
I only got to hear the part about cossell, so I'm hoping when I listen to it on demand tomorrow, the subject of orenthal james simpson comes up...and the greatest prank call in history

I've read that Meredith couldn't stand him. Gee, what a surprise. If the Dandy One found you obnoxious then your shite was weak.

Howard Cossell Drunkenly Called a Fight Between 2 Inner City Kids
Well, wasn't that his whole career?

Per the Esquire article, Cossell detested Dandy Don & all the others in the broadcast booth with him. As well, he "hated ( Michael's word) everyone at ABC sports...pick a name & Michael gave Cossell's views of that person. Michaels said that it finally came to the point of either he or Cossell not calling MLB games any more after Cossell showed up drunk & totally unprepared, something that Michaels said happened every game. Rooney told Michaels that he would take care of the problem & Cossell never showed up drunk again. Unprepard, all the time.
