What is the rifle/caliber of choice of the OB during primitive deer season?

Also can someone explain when you can hunt with a bolt action rifle in MS? Is there a split season for modern weapons?

The 10 day primitive season ends Saturday. After November 30 you can hunt with any legal weapon even during primitive weapon so long as you are on private property.
.35 Whelen is my personal favorite for PW.
7-08 from Saturday on though.

What he said, December 1 you can hunt with anything you want as long as it's private land. My question, does leased land count as private? I'm assuming it does.

Marlin 336 is my favorite. When I take long shots, I have a Winchester M70 in ought 6. I want a Tikka in 308 though
Primitive is my bow because I don't have a muzzle loader

Bow
I rifle hunt during the rifle season (will use the bow sometimes also) but when it's archery or primitive I take the string and stick

Thanks. I hunt with a guy who leases land near Woodville. Would assume that we could shoot a modern weapon after Nov 30th?

Yeah you're good.

I think 35 Whelan is the superior caliber for primitive. I use a 444 Marlin because 35 Whelan isn't (or wasn't at the time) legal for primitive in Louisiana.

I copied from MS WFP website:
New for 2014 - 2015 Deer Hunting Season
During any open season on deer with primative weapons after November 30th 2014, a person may use any legal weapon of choice on private lands only, if the person is the title owner of the land; the lessee of the hunting rights on the land; a member of a hunting club leasing the hunting rights on the land; or a guest of a person specified above.

In talking to a buddy today, he told me the 35 Whelen was the way to go. He has a Handi rifle in 45-70 and said it kicks like a mule!

.35 Whelen with Barnes TTSX is hard to beat.

Thank you sir! Looks like I don't need to buy a primitive weapon after all....

It does kick that's for sure but I never seem to notice this though as I'm watching the deer I just shot buckle and fall right over
