I remember getting my bell rung nearly everyday in grade school football. That can't be good for a developing brain.
Grade school is too early. I think most people acknowledge that.
I'll let mine play flag to learn the sport. And if he wants to play in high school he can. I understand the brain is still developing at that age, but I won't ban him from playing a high school sport

if I can remove 1 serious risk without removing any of the rewards, why wouldn't I do that?
Maybe football is rewarding for many. For many, it gives them the opportunity to receive a top notch education. Would Richard Sherman be Stanford-educated without football?
For many it teaches discipline/teamwork, etc. I know you can get that from other sports too, but maybe football is their passion. Baseball/Basketball can be won by an individual in many cases (pitcher dominating) and soccer can be one at the younger levels by having one dominant individual. A dominant RB or QB won't be shite without others to block or stop the other team.
I don't see how you can say it's a HUGE risk. It isn't. It's being sensationalized by the media. Don't get me wrong...the NFL downplaying and flat out ignoring head injuries for so long is deplorable.
However, at the youth level, I don't believe the risk of permanent or serious injury is that great or is much greater than other sports.
I'd venture to say most of us here went to HS with a football program. I'd also venture to say very few of us know people permanently injured or with CTE especially compared to knowing people who died from drugs or car accidents.

I agree! I told an African American friend to have his really athletic son play lax and then make sure he applies to Johns Hopkins, Duke or Williams

Quit comparing the two. One occurs immediately the other may take years to appear.
I know plenty of people that smoked in high school and none of them are dead. Must be safe.

There's really no point in playing football before 7th or 8th grade. Hell, most of the kids I played with that went on to Division 1 schools didn't start until 9th grade.
If I ever have a son, and he wants to play as a teenager, I wouldn't stand in his way. But there's just no point to the peewee stuff.

The good that comes from football far outweighs the bad. Just have to make sure the kids are taught proper technique.
edit: i dont think its a bad idea to make them wait a few years. Flag football is probably better while theyre still learning the rules, etc.

Football's going to die in about twenty years.
Do people really believe this or is it just hyperbole? Football will never die in our lifetimes. It may evolve, potentially even radically, but the demand for it is still there, it'll won't die completely anytime soon

And for many Mom's teaching teamwork through football is not near as important as keeping there son safe. There are other ways to teach to teach teamwork.
If the Mom does not support the sport and feel good about it, then the precious little boy of theirs is not going to be playing it.
Football is losing support from Mom's all across the country and that will be the downfall if it becomes to rampant. I see it in my wife. She says why should my boy play football when there are other sports with less negatives he could pursue.

I would rather my son be a soccer star.

I believe it will effectively be dead or just a intramural sport of sorts in 50 years.

As would many former football players. Several of the parents of the kids on my nephew's soccer team were SEC level athletes -- including football. They don't want their boys playing football or baseball. They want them playing soccer.
I see a bright future for the US on the world stage in the next ten years or so. Football's loss is Futbol's gain.

I know of two guys around my age group that were paralyzed by football. You don't know when it might happen. I got two concussions playing highschool football myself, but I also got one more snowboarding. At the time I thought seeing stars was just getting my bell rung so I didnt tell anybody and kept playing. No coaches ever even brought up head injuries when I was playing at a very competitive highschool football level.
One thing is for sure for my son, In Texas they start playing full tackle football at a young age. My son wont be participating in that for sure. If he really wants to play football it will be touch or seven on seven and he will only move up to full tackle around middle school sometime.
There is no reason in my head for 5 to 12 years old to be out banging heads against each other. When he gets older I might consider it and I will teach him proper shoulder tackling myself.
The problems come up when you just farm your kid out to a guy reliving his glory years and you don't supervise how he is teaching your kid to play.
All in all, I will probably encourage him to play more games that will give him a lifetime of enjoyment like golf, basketball, etc. Rather then a game he can only play for a few years.
perfectly reasonable. I don't think you need to play tackle football until the middle school level.

Mine either.
Basically, I won't let my kids play tackle until middle school, if that. They can learn the sport by watching and playing 7on7 and stuff.
If it's meant for them to be a pro (highly unlikely) it's their choice. That's what I meant when I said it's their lives/their choice to play.
More than likely my kids will be in band and baseball like me and do neither professionally. I'd rather my kid be academically gifted than athletic any day. But, that's a rarity among more than you would think.

Baseball is more dangerous than football for kids aged 5-16

No doubt. Peewee tackle is more for parents and coaches to relive their glory days or lack therof.
Those kids should work on running, catching, and just general coordination, which is why kids should be playing as many youth sports as possible...baseball, baskeball, 7on7/flag, soccer, etc.
Unfortunately, travel baseball is disqualifying baseball for many.

So you won't let your kid play football until the age when it might actually start to get dangerous and when kids start to get stronger and more powerful.
Bunch of dumbasses up in here
