All because we didn't throw enough, huh?

For the most part, yes.

And why are you ignoring the fact that other things go on in a game that can lead to a loss besides "not throwing enough"?

Because this thread is specifically about LSU's pass attempts over the last 10 years compared to the rest of college football.

Compared to the champions, we are not too far off.

Right, but you and OP are essentially implying (or just plainly stating) that not throwing the ball enough is the direct cause of our not winning a title since 2007. This is what I'm trying to address.

I would have guessed that LSU threw the ball more often last year but it was 44th in yards per game, tied for 2nd in yards per pass attempt, 3rd in passing yards per attempt, and 1st in 3rd down conversions. Incredibly efficient passing game last season (6th in the country).

Telling stat: Every team in the top 10 in passing efficiency in 2013 won at least nine games. The average record of the top 10 teams in passing efficiency this year is 7.0-1.5.

I do believe that our refusal to pass the ball stunts the growth of our qb's. We have lost at least 3 games in all but one season since 2008. As Tiger fans we love to beat our chests about the NFL talent that has run through our program. So nobody can say that we don't have the players. There has to be some reason that we keep losing 3 games a year. Our defense has been great for most of those seasons (save 2013), so I would have to place the blame on the offense for most part. LSU had an embarrassment of talent on last year's offensive team, yet we finished somewhere in the 30's for total offensive output. We will never again see a team with a qb, rb, and 2 wr's that are all starting in the NFL by Week 9 of the next year. That kind of offensive talent should have been able to outscore its opponents because even thought our defense wasn't lights out, they were decent.

You can't blame it on the quarterbacks. If we don't have good talent at quarterback then that is on the coaches for being poor talent evaluators. Personally, I think the qb talent is there to provide competent passing game to complement a run first offense. We just fail to develop it.

'Member when we strayed from the run and aired it out against Ole Miss last year? That went swimmingly.

that was one fricking game....so what???? you basically go into shell and decide we're not going to make the passing game an integral part of our offense moving forward?
It's been basically nonexistent this year. Thank god the o-line and backs finally came around or we'd be totally fricked.

It isn't a priority at LSU. The experts across the nation know it...realistic fans know it...but certain fans refuse to accept it b/c it would be deemed negative to question a coach with the success CLM has had. It is bad for some fans to wonder/thick with a more balanced offense we could be even more successful.

Had we developed Mett during all the blowouts in 2011 he may have been even better in 2013.

Don't just look at ranks. Look at attempts.

Under Miles LSU peaked at 442 attempts in 2007 when we won a National Championship. We threw it 391 in 2008 and started dialing it back in 2009 and 2010 which had 336 and 301 attempts respectively. Those are signficant drop offs but understandable given the issues in '08 and '09. We went to an all time low in 2011 (279), the year we dominanted everyone with our run game and played for a National Championship. I can't argue with anyone who thinks we should have thrown it more in the Championship game but can you honeslty say that we shold have thrown more all season given the production of the run game? In 2012 when Mett took over as starter we went up to 356 attempts. In 2013 there were 326 attempts but we had a 3000 yard passer. Thats efficiency, man.

Miles was asked about this a few weeks ago and he claims when you take out the blow-outs/garbage time we're closer to 50/50 pass/run. Anybody have any numbers to support or refute that?

I think this is more what these stats indicate. More what EVERYONE ELSE is doing rather than us. Mad respect for sticking with hard-nosed football, Les.

My thought as well. It's amazing that LSU can still convince big time WR to play here. Quinn and Dupree were big time recruits, yet they are virtually ignored in LSU's offense. Ruben Randle was every bit as highly decorated as Julio Jones and A.J. Green. Yet, until 2011, he was a minimal part of the game plan.

I'm not so much concerned with how many pass attempts LSU avg. per game. However, there are time when this offense completely bogs down, and yet there seems to be little emphasis to get the ball to the WRs look to be big time play makers.

Les's style is to run the ball; stay very conservative in the passing game; and play great defense. For the most part it has worked. However, in doing so you put immense pressure on your defense to keep the game close until the offense breaks a big play or two in the running game and/or wears the opponent down.

LSU has the talent to be very explosive on offense, yet they choose not to be

I think you and EAA have it figured out...just wish we had a QB this year like we had last year...well, every year, while I am wishing...

How do you define explosive offense? I think you'd be surprised how highly this offense has ranked over the last two years in explosive plays (both in the pass game and in the run game). As of two weeks ago (I don't have updated stats) we led the country in explosive plays this year with Oregon and Mississippi State.

It looks to me that by far the greatest indicator of success is passing efficiency (high percentage completions, big plays, few turnovers). We had all three last year. We have 2 of 3 this year.

Every WR who has started here for the last few years is in the NFL. Thats gotta be a good selling point.

I think the underlying issue is that there's no attempt to have a back up plan or plan B for when they run up against better talent. It seems that Miles just crosses his fingers and hopes it works. Then, when the second half comes around and the same crap doesn't work, he takes the roll of the captain of the titanic and goes down with the ship without even trying something else. Les has done a great job of keeping the program relevant. However, the maddening part is thinking about where this program would be if they could consistently keep the offense balanced with a passing attack. There are some years when the defense won't be there to bail the team out and they will need more than just a run game to win.

It will happen with Cam. He showed it last year. This year is truly a bit of an anomaly because of youth at the skill positions.

As of 10/22 (I don't have updated stats):

Power 5 Conference Leaders in 20+ yard plays
1t. Mississippi State - 47
1t. Oregon - 47
3. LSU and Michigan State - 46

Yes, we were pretty awesome in 2005, 2006, and 2007. We've lost 3 games 5 of the 6 years since, and are sitting at 2 losses this year.
