Simple Minds might be the most underrated band of the 80's

and probably 3rd best band behind Talking Heads and The Smiths.
Everyone knows "Don't you forget about me" but I think all their other work is miles ahead of that hit, and really that song only holds the band back.
They got their start as a punk band in the late 70's, and toured with Generation X (Billy Idol's punk band). Once they became Simple Minds, they started to become more experimental with their music, and created strange ambiances in their songs. "Veldt" was a song that they experimented with, using their instruments to reflect the sounds one would hear on the African plains.
A popular band in the UK, it wasn't until "Don't you forget about me" showed up on "The Breakfast Club" soundtrack that they got recognition in the US. From there, they released the album "Once Upon a Time" in 1985 and it would lead to a larger commercial success in the US
Alive and Kicking
Promised you a Miracle
Sanctify Yourself
All the Things She Said
Belfast Child
Life in a Day
Sweat in Bullet
Up on the Catwalk
These would be my Top tracks by them.
Fun Fact: They got their name from the lyrics of David Bowie's "Jean Geanie"
What does the MB think of Simple Minds?

I think they're one of many one hit wonder mediocre Euro bands from the 80's and are appropriately rated and irrelevant in the grand scheme of music.

Good list.
I'm not sure I'd put them up there with Talking Heads or The Smiths but I wore Once upon a Time cassette out back in 86.
I had New Gold Dream and Street Fighting Years. Street Fighting Years was great. Belfast Child, Biko, Kick it in.
Don't You might have been the true 80's song but this was epitome of a Do it yourself 80's video.

definitely agree simple minds is under-rated. that was some good shite they were pumping out in the 80s.
I would definitely agree New Order was a better 80s band than them though. But definitely Talking Heads is #1.
