What role should he play in this team to bring out the best in him? Defensive Specialist?

Designated hitter.

I'd like to see Rivers start with Jrue for the Spurs game and Gordon come in to guard Manu in Saturday. Just to see how it works with him coming off the bench. Although it worries me that he might take shots away from RYNO who seemed to find his shot last night.

But to answer the OP, Gordon has to play for this team.

It was interesting to see Rivers/Jimmer/Gordon to start the 4th and just how little Gordon was involved. If that's the norm, I don't know what to say at this point. If the plan is to turn Gordon into a corner 3 guy, this season will not have a happy ending for the Pelicans.

Rivers played well, but I'm not sure how sustainable his shooting is. He tries to live in that Parker floater zone, but that's a very, very tough shot. That said, he picked his spots well and the Hornets made it easy for him to get all the way to the rim.

I agree with all of this. Rivers was impressive last night but he was getting into the lane with no opposition from charlotte.

I also think Gordon needs to be a starter on this team. He needs to hit those deep balls to space the floor for this team. starting Rivers does nothing for spacing as he makes his living getting in the paint as well.

Rivers had a very high corner 3 percentage last year.

If Tyreke continues his improved outside shot, that'll help spacing as well.

Not saying Rivers can't do it but if Gordon shot returns to average he is clearly the better shooter/option for the starting rotation.

He's looked awful so far though. I'm sure he can get back to decency but the only thing he's really contributing is defense(which isn't bad).

If I was monty I'd try it for one game and see. This is probably the time to experiment due to how early it is.

Pelicans would be better off not playing Eric Gordon at all?

This year False. He'll start hitting shots eventually. Next year, I wonder if we could do something like buy him out for $10 million and then stretch that $10 million ($3 million cap hit for 3 years). I do think a $3 million cap hit is preferrable to Gordon at $15.

The rest of the guards were having difficulty getting to and finishing at the rim. I think you're underselling Rivers' ability to create space for himself. It is the one borderline elite ability he has imo. He's actually finishing left handed this year which is also promising. That floater is a tough shot though, and he will have tough nights with it.

I for the life of me have no earthly idea what Demps was thinking when declining his option. I think Austin's as good as gone after this season. It's hard for me to even get too excited about him playing well, unless we start beating good teams and look to have a shot at the playoffs.

Stretch Gordon, use Austin's salary to offset the stretch cap hit and still be able to sign a starting SF. Rivers on the books is the difference between whether you have $8-$9 million in cap space or $11-$12 million, which is likely the difference between getting your first choice or your 3rd choice at SF.

Does Eric Gordon have the AIDS now? He really looks like it.

The 2015 SF class is pretty weak. You aren't pulling Jimmy Butler or Rudy Gay for $11-12 million in this current climate. I don't see any $8-12M SFs outside of maybe Luol Deng if he opts out.

Hindsight is 20/20, but would you honestly not want the Austin Rivers we've seen so far for $3m? He's noticeably improved in certain areas and might be our only guard who looks to Davis/Anderson as the first option before even thinking about scoring.

Like I said, he's going to price himself out of our price range if he plays consistent basketball. A 22 year old with obvious upside who's already looking like he might be taking that 3rd year leap will cost more than $3m.

ETA: Plus we lost his rights in 2016 unless I'm mistaken.

Yeah. I was impressed that he finished around defenders last night. It's never been a problem for him to get to the rim; it's been his finishing (or perhaps not passing out of bad shots) that has torpedoed any value he might have.

He cleans that up, he has a place in the league for a long time
