I am just wanting to get some advice and ideas on what to do in my back yard. I am brand new home owner (within the last year). I have a back yard that backs up into greenspace, that drops off and down at the bottom has a river. I was wanting to add a few trees maybe around 4, but would love to have a hammock between two of them at some point and maybe some bushes. I was thinking rose bushes, nothing that takes too much time or work. Pics will follow later. Thanks for the help.

Don't hang your hammock over a rose bush.

Roses ain't low maintenance either from what I know. River birch, oak, cypress. Just choose what tree you like.

A live oak will grow sturdy enough quickly for a hammock. They may not get tall quick but trunk size will be fast.

Plant something to hide that huge concrete man hole.

Small garden inside the "U" of that driveway.

Clear out some of that brush around existing trees.

Pea gravel trail down to a small deck on the river.

Get azaelas. Not roses. Pita is what they are. Depending on what your yard sounds like I'd get azaelas. You can trim them or just let then get huge. Beautiful in the spring time. Plant you some cypress trees by the bank.

I put a deer feeder in my back yard. Sometimes now there are five at a time under it. Put it out and they will find it.

River birch is the last tree I would ever plant, anywhere. The bark peels off and makes a mess. They drop sticks like a son of a gun. I hate River Birch.

The deer come up to the house at least weekly and been wondering if I really want to feed them or not. Thought about a game camera to see what else is out there.

define you property lines with some planting beds or sculpted mulch beds with azaleas and or with perinials google english gardens, stick with your usda zone and go with native things that grow in your area. Trees, Hardwood ones Oaks Maples dogwoods.
You can diy a paver patio out back whatever size you decide to build double it add a pergolia over it maybe a fire pit etc.. and if you decide to put up a fence put a gate in the back toward the greenspace so you can get to that greenspace and maybe a path down to the creek. overseed you lawn in sept and feed it every 3 mos.

I love them. Looks great and natural. Course I don't live in a subdivision with the yuppies. Perfect sculpted landscape looks like crap to me.

Trees should be planted during the coldest months where their growth rate is lowest. This will reduce the stress on the tree and enable it to flourish in its new environment better.

If you're planting them yourself, be sure you don't build up the soil higher than the existing base of the trunk. The tree/bush/plant will die if you do (trees 'breathe' through their bark).

For bushes, I'd imagine similar.
