All polls are highly subjective. How can one precisely quantify the quality of a football team in order to create a comparative rank? It's not possible, IMO. With so many variables, one team is "higher quality" vs. some teams but not compared to others. All that matters is winning. You want a consensus champ? Expand the playoffs. Of course, I could be wrong...

EVERYONE, and I mean EVERY COLLEGE FOOTBALL FAN, ought to be upset with Ole miss at #4 and LSU at #19 if they are interested in a system that somehow reflects reality.
Why? It is reality.
Ole Miss has a great resume.

I wouldn't get all worked up over the first rankings. Most of the teams ahead of us will start knocking each other out soon. LSU just needs to take care of what's in front of them and everything will work out.

IMHO. this is an early example of what the committee will do...." a little from each of the best 4 conferences" if possible
MANY did not see the game..so they are simply going by number of Ws and Ls.
there is no way in the world that humans can analyze all of the data that the computer could....NO POSSIBLE WAY
on top of that, ALL OF THESE PEOPLE are EXTREMELY BUSY PEOPLE....
I have said it before..it is a way to enlarge TV audience and revenues HIDING BEHIND SOMETHING CALLED A COMMITTEE

Who has a better one besides the teams in front of them?
Posted on 10/29/14 at 2:02 pm to LNCHBOX
Not many. They've got a win over a top 6 team and a "quality" road loss. Seems like some people on here forget that LSU has lost twice and aren't in the playoff picture.

I would like to welcome back the much maligned 'eyeball test', which was the reason for the BCS creation. Human bias is back as a huge player in the equation.
Media bitched about split titles...fans bitched about bias...the BCS with it's strength of schedule component was born.
Suddenly, media bitched about the lack of a human element and programs in the #3 slot fell in and agreed with them. Gone was the BCS heavily loaded towards the computers and out came the version with more media input.
Media then began complaining that until we got a playoff we'd never really know. ESPN ginned up support. In 2011 SEC fans were told that the LSU-BAMA game was essentially a playoff game with the winner moving on. Then LSU won, and we were immediately told that OK State did not meet the eye ball test, that BAMA was obviously #2 and they got to lie in wait while LSU had to play UGA for the right at a rematch.
At some point, can we as fans admit that we've been played by ESPN? Media does not give two shits about the integrity of the game, the history, what its always meant to win the National Championship. They care about having yet another large scale tournament that will help generate buzz that they can then write stories about, sell ads in, etc.
I am NOT advocating this AT ALL...but the ONLY way to have a legit, unbiased playoff system would be to scrap polling altogether, set up a system similar to the NFL in which conferences act like divisions and teams have to win their way in. Anything short of a well defined mathematical system is simply Olympic figure skating judging in different clothes.

lost twice...in blowout fashion
Why do people keep saying this? We lost to the cow lovers by less than a touchdown. Is it because we seemed a outmatched at the time? Does the committee take that into consideration?

Exactly!!!
Rankings are way overrated until the end of the season...Would you rather be number 1 now, or number 1 come Dec 7th? I know number 1 is out of the question this year, but put any number in that spot and it all comes up to "it's too early to know" who is just how good...

Wont Matter if we lose to Bama. One week at a time Baby.

Of course. And most of the ones who watched that game came away seeing LSU getting dominated for 55 minutes and likely weren't even around watching when LSU scored some late to "dress up" the final score.

But they aren't ranking those two in a bubble, you have to consider all the other teams in between them.
Nothing happened in between them that would warrant keeping OM so close to the top after losing to an unranked team or keeping an unranked team so far towards the bottom after beating a top ranked team.
Does that lack of movement not seem out of place based on the history of polling of college football teams? My ire has nothing to do with LSU's rank in so far as it makes them less or more likely for any payoff. The lack of more movement in either direction makes me question the system.

The issue is we were completely non competitive for 3.5 quarter s against State and barely even showed a pulse against Auburn. Yes, those two teams are some of the highest ranked, but the losses were very lopsided. That has to be taken into consideration.
Not the final score on one of those.

I think people are concerned because it's not just the top 4 that matter. Rankings 1-12 are used for placement of teams in the major bowls--which matter for revenue, recruiting, and national perceptions of the program's stature. If LSU wins out or loses more than one of the remaining games, then it's probably irrelevant. But imagine that we lose to Alabama and win the other two (a very plausible scenario). Would we be in the top 12 then? With the current rankings, I think clearly not.

Why? Ole Miss beat the committee's #6 team and lost a great game on the road to the #19 team (who has lost twice). Who do you think, based on resume, should be ahead of Ole Miss? None of the 1-loss contenders have a win as good as Ole Miss' win over Alabama.

but as far as this goes:

Sometimes the top 2-8 teams might just be all in the same division. Why should we reward those who crushed their way through weak competition to get to the post season? I say we scrap the bias altogether and just move into straight computer polls. If you can't prove your system is completely free from bias (release the fricking formula Sagarin), it doesn't belong in any postseason determination. Then take a 6-8 team playoff from that and be done with it.
