Don't need a new rifle but I want one. Which would you get or are they pretty close to the same?

Out of those I would go 308

I was also thinking maybe 257

308 and it's not even close

If you go .308 check out the Remington sps tactical. My buddy has one. Very nice weapon.

they're literally .024 inches apart.

Just get the regular 7mag.

For hunting or what?

Thomas magnum is high on his 7-08. I don't know much about them, TBH.
I think my next rifle will be a 270 WSM. I recently joined the tikka club, but won't buy another one. The thing shoots great, I am just not crazy about several of the features that it brings.

Mind sharing...been looking into them myself.

I would personally get 7mm-08, but it is pretty much a toss-up. If you want anything from deer to black bear, both will get the job done. If this is just a plinking rifle, .308 may be a better choice due to ammo variety.

More for a family type hunting rifle. I shoot an 06 but want something different

Have a 7mm-08. Love it. If you shoot in the brush get a 7mag. If its long shots 7mm-08 is great.

270 is the best deer round ever made.

Versatility they are miles apart. 7mm-08 is basically a low-recoil .308 that's better suited for lighter game at longer ranges. .308 will cover everything 7mm-08 will do, and more, at the expense of more recoil.

If you want something for kids (even 6 or 7 year olds) and adults, the 7mm-08 is perfect.

The first is that you can't load it without the detachable magazine in it. This means you have to keep up with another component of the gun to operate it. A new magazine is $70 from Amazon.
You can't remove the live round from the chamber and insert it into the magazine while the magazine is attached due to the top rail of the gun. I can do this with my A-Bolt. This means you have to remove the magazine from the gun to unload it properly, which takes me back to my first complaint above.
Other than that, I love the gun. It shoots great and handles even better.
