Decent Rifle for Deer and Hogs?

A friend in the San Fran area of Cali is looking for a decent rifle for deer and hogs, can I get some opinions?
First rifle and trying to be cost conscious so try not to break the bank.
I told him to spend more on optics than the rifle.

in a savage axis or upgrade to trophy hunter. get the combo and upgrade the optics later.

I agree with this, although I know some on here do not.

After I said that I asked how far are you shooting and got a "i dunno, I plan to go hunt on a military base wma area."
Anyway, I'm looking online and a tikka t3 hunter combo is like 649 and the savage is 549.

Tikka T3
Savage Axis
Ruger American
All decent budget end rifles.
Avoid the Remington 770. It is garbage.

I agree. I'd also add Howa to his short list to consider.
I thought the Tikka combo would cost more than the price quoted. Although the opitcs on a combo aren't usually great, they're good enough to get started. Sounds like the friend is a newbie. If he continues to hunt he can always upgrade later. In the meantime he'll have optics that are good enough to use for a number of years.
As far as calibers, I'd suggest "the usual suspects": 25-06, *260 Rem, *6.5X55, 270 Win, *7-08, *280 Remington, *7X57, 308 Win and 30-06. The * indicates guns that are good hunting calibers, but may pose a problem finding ammo.

What kind of scopes are on the combos you quoted, as for guns I am very partial to the tikka, but know that they give you rings with the gun, but they are crap so if u buy the combo change out the rings
As for caliber I like 270 and 30/06

Add 25-06 to that list and you have got yourself a winner

I got myself a Rem 700 in .30-'06 last year...was at Cabela's, came with a 3-9x40 scope. $440. (Tax free weekend FTMFW)
Scope was perfectly fine for 100 yds, got a new scope as a gift before I ever tried shooting longer distance than that

All you need. I bought an Axis for my son and it shoots great. When he gets older ill buy him a nicer scope for it.

LOL - Savage (accu trigger model) or HOWA .308. Vortex optics kind of negate the quote above - crossfire II in what ever magnification he would like. If he goes this route he will spend more on the gun and won't regret the vortex...

A 300 blackout. Best short range gun. Poor hogs and deer don't stand a chance. I have a nikon on mine.

Ammo is hard to find and that's not too economical.
Best all around will be easiest to find.

I have a 6.8spc for up close, like it better than my 300BO

Well I only use mine for deer and hogs so I maybe shoot 10 times a year between sighting in and hunting. I never really looked into a 6.8. I like the 6.5 grendel but ammo is insanely hard to find. Weatherby makes a 6.5 creedmore that I wouldn't mind owning but again, there's no ammo.
