didn't know you could chat to your friends during that time, or at any time during class for that matter.
my wife learned that when she started sitting in at public schools when she was in school to get her teaching certification.
She went to two schools in LP and two in EBR and said she couldnt' believe the teacher would let the kids get away with so much.
We went to catholic school. you didn't get up out of your chair, and you didn't chit chat during class.

makes no sense to call it homework

It's a head start. Homework is designed to be extra practice on the new topic. If you actually finish it in class, you've mastered the topic and don't need the homework. If you didn't cut up but still didn't finish in class, you need the practice. If you dicked off, you're a shithead.

I don't see how anyone can complain about a teacher giving you 10-15 minutes head start to work on homework so you can ask questions before taking it home (or finish it if you've mastered it).

LOL, I went to two Catholic schools, a private school, and public school.
No school in the world has absolute silence 24/7. When teachers give time to work on homework, it's usually more lax time and some kids start chatting. Those are the kids who don't finish, generally.

My teachers would teach until the end of he period. Class would often start by reviewing the previous homework though.

Depends. This didn't happen in every grade, but I specifically remember many teachers giving you a chance to get a head start throughout the years. I always loved that because I took advantage and tried to finish it all.

I remember the same

or the best were the teachers that would assign the homework at the beginning of class, and then you could just do the homework during class while they lectured/taught

Your daughter is probably pretty stupid then if it takes her that long to complete the homework. Just sayin.

I had a lot of teacher who would spend first half, maybe 3/4ths of class lecturing, and then would do a few problems with us from the homework to give us the basic understanding and made sure we were all understanding the material, and then gave us time to start on homework. This wasn't just elementary, went all the way to high school. And also math in college.

Gives kids the chance to look at hw and then ask the teacher questions if they still have issues.

Yeah! I vaguely remember that too. I never had long nights of homework.

My younger brother did, though. Biggest issue: He wouldn't sit down and do it. He just wouldn't concentrate. Dude could take 2 hours just to write his spelling words 3x each.

Not saying OP is lying. I've actually been seeing parents all over FB and Reddit complaining about homework lately. I just also remember never having much because I did as much as I could at school, and it never took me that long anyway.

Why so late? I remember having homework every night at that age....but my parents made that be the first thing we did when we got home. You wanted to go play with friends or watch tv....do your homework first.

Just stop it. He is saying that his 4th grader has 6 hours of homework a night. That is after being in school for 8 hours a day. If you work 14 hours a day, you are griping about it.

We should not ask 4th graders to work 14 hours a day.

My kids go through the same thing. It is insane. They are in school all day long and are exhausted when they come home. They rest for a bit, get something to eat, and then are up until 10 or 11 every night doing homework. I left my 3rd grader at the table the other night doing worksheets of mindless repetition. He smiled at me and got back to work. It was 10:30pm. I couldn't do it for him and he understood what to do, but I had to get to bed. I was exhausted.

Teachers/Schools think that they are teaching with all of this stuff, but in reality, they are stealing childhoods. Stop blaming the parents. Most parents work hard all day and try to provide a life for their kids. I am not doing my kid's 3rd grade homework for him. But, the amount that he is assigned is insane.

My 7th grader had straight A's with all 99's or 100's in every class. He brought home an 89 in math because he accidentally left one of his many assignments at home one day and brought it first thing the next day. The teacher gave him a ZERO even though he completed it perfectly and it affected his grade and dropped him to a B. Back in my day, she would have dropped him a letter grade for being a day late. He was disappointed but I told him I was proud of him, don't worry about it, and learn from it for next time. It is the second B that he has ever made in his life. In my opinion, the teacher is a moron. But, whatever.

So, stop with the sanctimonious "what time does she start" stuff. You don't know what you are talking about.

i disagree.
when someone distracted class by chit chatting or getting up, they got warned, they did it again and got sent out of class.
The advantage a private school has is when they have kids like this that won't listen to them and continues to be a problem in the classroom, they tell them to go to another school. Public schools can't really do that.
ALso, when you did get in trouble, punishment was usually to have to right a few pages out of the social studies or science book and get that signed by your parents.

Yeah, I see the same thing all the time.
Parents really should just request meetings with all their kids teachers and do into the meetings with open minds and not thinking that their child can't be the problem.

Again, not saying OP's kid is the problem at all. But talkings to the teachers can be very beneficial. Maybe OP's kid has someone distracting beside her or at her table preventing her from focusing? Can be multiple things.
