Tonight the 1965 LSU team was honored at LSU. They defeated the previously unbeaten Arkansas Razorbacks 14-7 in the 1966 Cotton Bowl. It was and still is one of the biggest wins in LSU history. This is a photo taken during the 50th anniv. dinner.
My dad is in the middle standing.
ETA: I'm a doofus. This is a gathering for the 1964 team that beat Syracuse in the 65 Sugar Bowl.

They have that look like they understand Les' Offensive philosophy.

That game was my introduction to LSU football. I remember my dad telling me that LSU would be playing undefeated Arkansas, who, i believe, had just beaten Texas 42-24. LSU was 7-3, and so it was a shock to me and LSU that they got into the Cotton Bowl. Arkansas went right down the field and scored to go up early 7-0, and the rout seemed on course. LSU would go up 14-7 at half and the defense held on for an amazing win. Too bad there is little film of the game on youtube?

ETA: Cholly Mac greets Jim Corbett after the game. It was amazing we won this one!

I hate to nitpick....but how can this be the 50th anniversary of something that happened in 1965-66?

Alajones was an English major?

Actually, I'm an English Minor. I guess because between 65 and 2014 there have been 50 seasons. I agree though, especially because the other anniversarys were in 95 and 05.

I was nine and went to the cotton bowl,my second LSU game,,my mom and grandad were from Ark.,and we had a player on LSU that was from the small town we live at. My family just wanted to see a great game and did. They were for LSU . My brother, acted like a prick, but thats normal.Funny I can still remember names from both teams ,so many years ago.Labruzzo, Stokley, Screen, Masters. And even Ark. Brittnam, Crocket.

A Great Tiger Victory, pretty historical, Arky was on a 22/23 game winning streak and no one gave LSU a shot.
One of the stories I've read was that the team was at it's hotel and the pigger fans were doing their hog yells and what not and as Cholly Mac said "One of them Arkansas women, all decked out in her red dress, well she basically pointed at the tigers and said oh look they did bother to show up....well I tell ya, you don't ever want to corner a bunch of mad tigers and that's what that lady did"
Another "tale" I lived in Memphis for some years in the late 90's/2000's and had some business dealings with a huge arky fan. Good guy but once he found out I was a LSU guy, well everytime we had some business deal to do he always went back to how the 66 cotton bowl broke his heart and how he still couldn't believe that LSU beat his Hogs that day....30-35 years later

This was also the first year the AP voted after the bowls. #1 Michigan St. lost in the Rose Bowl, and #2 Arkansas would have been #1. They lost and opened the door for Alabama to be #1 after all was said and done.

January 1, 1966 was probably the greatest day in college football history. I know it's my own personal favorite.

That doesn't work either. This season would be the 49th season since 1965.

Maybe they wanted to go ahead and get it out of the way in 2014 in case the Ebola gets us all?

The team is being honored for their Sugar Bowl victory over Syracuse in Jan 1965.

The first LSU game I remember as well. Hogs had won 22 straight games.
Also the year the love of my life was born. 1966 was a good year.

Both would meet tragic ends down the road. Sad how life can get to some people. Happy they had that moment of joy in 1966.
