have all banned visitors from Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, & Senegal.

Right now over 30 countries & rapidly growing have instituted travel bans including: Chad, South Sudan, Rwanda, Tanzania, Angola, Zimbawe, Namibia, Botswana, Madagascar, Kenya, & Mauritius. yet out incompetent President is too worried about his polling numbers to institute the travel ban.

Yes it protects us because right now the residents of these countries who are infected hear about how US citizens are being treated and released from Ebola so they are trying to get to the US so that our hospital system can treat them. This is what took place with Duncan.

Young male citizens of Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, & Senegal would have looked like Obama's son if Michelle wouldn't have eaten the kid first.

1 person infected 2. How many are potential at risk because of these 2? At least 130 (flight from Dallas to Cleveland). Hopefully none, but if several from the flight are infected, who have they been in contact with? Do you see the snowball forming? Or are you too concerned with being politically correct to the far left wing nutjobs?

1 person got through and infected 2 others within a very short time. One of those may have infected her SO, the other went on a plane ride with 100+ people.

That's just from the one person that got through.

so the question still remains to what extent do we need to block out travel to other countries in order to be safe from ebola?

You know what this reminds me of? with all of the liberal apologists defending Obama, saying, "only 1 person has Ebola" and that it's nearly impossible to spread?

The Obamacare proponents who were saying that the conservatives fears of Obamacare were dramatized, and that it was unlikely to be what we all feared. 2 years later and guess what, Obamacare is EXACTLY what the right has been saying it would be. An utter failure.

You lefties need to realize, there are times when the rats must abandon ship. Now would be an opportune time for you.

It's a delaying tactic. The longer we fight it over there, the more likely we are to be ready (vaccines, procedures for containment, etc) when it finally makes it into the wild here.

Until the disease is contained, the threat of widespread contamination is heightened.

How many people must be infected with Ebola before common sense rears it's head?

This isn't the first ever ebola outbreak. However, this is the worst. It has been defeated in the past, by isolating and burning the dead bodies, and anything contaminated. That's how you control this virus. Destroy it.

The purpose of "banning" is to slow the spread of the virus. If you halt it, then all the better. But you'll never know by doing nothing.

I believe there is a messaging problem coming from the WH.

You could say we are "banning" travel from said counties and the actual process is to screen travelers, quarantine certain individuals, etc.

Or you could say "travel bans will do nothing to stop the spread of Ebola" and implement a process to screen travelers, quarantine certain individuals, etc.

Both process are the same. However, in the former case you make the citizens feel good and secure. In the latter case the public loses confidence in your ability to handle the situation.

I realize that I normally don't come into contact with other people's bodily fluids. Hell I'm IN WEST AFRICA right now and they aren't freaking out as much as some of the people I've seen in the US.

I don't care about political correctness at all. I just don't freak the hell out over this stuff like y'all do. Let's just assume we shut down our border, what's to stop them from flying to Canada/Mexico and then crossing the border. If they are that desperate to get here, they will get here.

Honestly I was probably more worried about Swine Flu than this and I barely cared about that

ETA: Since when does not freaking about this and not caring if we ban travel make me an Obama apologist/Democrat? Never voted for a D in my life

Um, no. No travel to/from Liberia and other contagion countries where contraction of the disease is heightened. You know, common fricking sense.

So ban all of our doctors from helping and soldiers (which I still don't understand)?
