How to catch snapping turtles in a pond.

I have a half acre pond and have noticed quite a few larger snapping turtles and several soft shells. I recently saw an extremly large snapper surface while I was fishing the bank.
I've tried hanging lines from a few trees. I've tried lines on the bottom. No luck.
What does the Outdoor board say? Best method, equipment and bait to catch a few of these tasty suckers?
Thanks guys

I make lines with steel leaders then bait with chicken livers and throw it about 2-3ft off the bank. Use nylon string to tie off leader to something sturdy.
Ps. The chicken livers is only if your pond doesn't have catfish.

Got this guy out of my pond last year doing just what JD said. Except I used fresh cut up catfish.

If your pond has alot of catfish, you're probably better off trapping them

Turtle net. Get one. If you set it properly, it will catch every turtle in the pond.

hoop net with milk jug tied hanging from top with holes punched in it and full of any kind of meat or fish scraps.
If I lived close I would do it for the turtles.

Get an otter.

I use a 1/0 worm hook baited with plain old breakfast bacon. I set the baited hook right at the edge of the water where minnows, small bream, etc. can't get to it. I attach the baited hook to a 3 foot length of very small diameter aluminum wire attached to a piece of rebar stuck in the ground. You can actually see the bacon grease disperse immediately when you put the baited hook in the water. Snappers can't resist that breakfast bacon.

Even though this is a Pond Life thread, and I'm a master trapper.. I will leave this one for my Cajun brethren

We used to catch them on hot dog pieces. Throw out next to em under a cork and reel em in and shoot em when they bite. Would catch some big ones all the time.
