re: Superman Was Too Powerful to be Interesting in Man of Steel

He was thrown into buildings more than anything. He just took a lesson from the raccoon. He had to save the world.
And like I said, the damage that people attribute to Superman and Zod's battle is overstated. The world engine was the more destructive force and did nearly all of the damage.

I may be wrong, but I think it kinda boils down to this. Superman was the first superhero, historically the most popular (with major dips), and the most recognizable. He has always stood for the closest to pure good in several medias. So for MoS to set him up as flawed rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Think about it. First it was "Superman never kills!" Then once that was explained it became,"Superman destroyed a city". It even got down to people complaining that he destroyed an IHOP!
Alot of folks have very high expectations and set ways for the character. When these are not met, then people get pissed.
And then there are those that will simply Nate anything with the letters D and C attached to it.

He did just the opposite. They were shooting down ships so they wouldn't crash into the city below.

So wait...

I think the world is just too cynical nowadays to accept a hero without flaws. Instead of someone to aspire to, we prefer someone we know can screw up like we would. It's easier knowing no one is perfect instead of fretting over the reality we never will be.
Did the world want a perfect Superman and they were upset when they got flaws? Or did the world want a flawed Superman but were upset anyway?

Eh there wasn't progression, not from what I saw. These things were often noted in kind.

Do you guys even realize how many times you've had this exact discussion? I look forward to the next 6 years of DC films just to get some new material in here.

There's always a chance to learn something new.

I just watch these threads with mild interest now. I'll start getting into these once new movies start pumping new material for these discussions.
Btw, I notice the OP didn't even bother to answer my simple question. Lame.

OP only acknowledged posts that were beneficial to him. That is lame.

Batman wouldn't even give deadpool a chance.

In Man of Steel, they made Superman WAY too powerful. He was not like that in the original comics or TV show with George Reeves (he would punch criminals and they would just fall down) or even in the Christopher Reeve movies (when a bus was thrown on him you really wondered if he was ok).
The character has evolved over time. After all, he started out simply being, "Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings at a single bound!"
That's a Superman that can't fly. He can jump really high though! Anyone want to see a movie where Superman can't fly?
No...Supes has evolved over time, and the power we saw ion screen this last outing is EXACTLY what it would look like to have someone with what we now see as his powers tear assing through a city. In fact...we've already seen it a full decade before Mos in the Justice League cartoon.
LINK
Hell...they basically took the fight with Captain Marvel, put Zod in his place and went nuts. They even tossed in Superman being tossed into a bank vault in an early fight because it looked so cool in this one!
LINK
Supes gives zero fricks as his needlessly punches Darkseid through buildings...presumably with people inside of them and then proceeded to fly punch him...exactly like he did to Zod in MoS.
A debate can be had about how the over the top level of destruction did not fit the serious tone of the movie, or how because of it's level of groundedness it's now hard to image a universe where a rich guy with lots of toys who can beat yup street thugs can somehow be valuable in any real sense to what will amount to gods in the Justice League...but there really is no reason to complain that, in general, Superman was too powerful.
He's Superman.

Wolverine would also beat Bats.
And Big Barda would've beaten the shite out of Power Girl. To hell with all of y'all who voted against Barda.

These discussions are for serious fans and they frequently forget that battles like that took place in the JLU series all the time and yet it gets a pass and the MoS battke doesn't. Weird.

I think people hated so many other things about MoS that everything else just kind of gets thrown into the pile. The tone, the dialogue, the story, the "seriousness" of the film, the lack of red underwear, you name it.
