Wes Craven's Scream: Horror or Comedy?

So I finally got around to watching Craven's supposed magnum opus last night and I found myself to be very underwhelmed.
There was a lack of continuity with the film's tone (e.g. sometimes the atmosphere was eerie and obviously attempting to be scary, while other scenes seemed satirical and ridiculous) and I wasn't sure if I was meant to laugh or feel scared at times.
However, the plot did keep you on your toes by not revealing who the killer was until the film's final act.
How do you classify this critically-acclaimed horror/comedy flick?

Horror that finally didn't take itself too seriously and delivered enough humor for the horror to really work.
Underrated movie.

Both.
And it's one of the best horror movies of all time IMO. It's so brilliant and clever and meta, and it toed the line perfectly.

A really great film almost always contains bits of humor. It was an homage. A Tarantino style take on the horror genre. Scream was a great, game changing movie IMO.

You should have seen it when it came out. It made more sense at the time.

My favorite movie of all time. Very clever. Poked fun at the horror genre while being sort of scary itself.
Kids today probably won't get it, but it was very effective and smart for its time.

It took you 18 years to "finally get around" to watching Scream?

It doesn't fit in a genre.
Like Fargo it is just an absolutely perfect movie.

I really think that the opening scene with Drew Barrymore is one of the best horror scenes ever. I love it.
