How are people exposed to the radiation from phosphogypsum stacks if they don’t go near them? Veiw across the top of a phosphogypsum stack Radionuclides that are small particles (i.e., radionuclide dust) can become airborne as wind-blown dust or as dust thrown up into the air by cars and trucks. The radionuclides, uranium and radium-226, are present in the phosphogypsum and can become airborne. Once these radionuclides are in the air, people and animals can breathe them and they can settle out onto ponds and agricultural areas. Radon-222, a decay product of radium-226, is a gas and so may become airborne by diffusing into the air. EPA has determined, however, that the risks associated with stacking phosphogypsum are in line with acceptable risk practices.

Jeez, that makes me cringe.

fluorogypsum part of it is a byproduct of making HF at Honeywell, some of it is from PCS I think from their ammonia plant
Correct answer.
And it's only getting bigger, they got approved to double the height of the "mountain".
It's slightly radioactive and they've found zero use for it but are constantly researching to find something to do with it because as you can tell if they find something for it they will be sitting on a goldmine of waste to riches.

Phosphogypsum, It's a by product of a chemicaal made at PCS. It has nothing to do with the process of makin HF. Honeywell has no involvement. If you go to the other end of 3115 you can see what it starts as.

Is it used to neutralize acids of some kind?

Yep

Byproduct doesn't mean landfill.
btw, the Honeywell site is the largest HF producer in the world. At least I think it still is, would have recently been replaced if so.

I think they tried to pave some roads in AP with it a couple decades back. Results must not have been good.

Then what do you call a land mass to pile up radioactive waste? They have zero use for it, it's just like garbage until they find something to do with it.

I thought the EPA stepped in and nixed the idea due to the radioactivity. I could be wrong though.

This. They were worried about contaminated storm water runoff. Yep, no contaminated storm water runoff coming from A GIANT F#$KING MOUNTAIN OF IT!!!!

I'm sure it's in a lined and contained diked area
Posted on 10/14/14 at 4:10 pm to bamaswallows
They're called gyp-stacks. It's a by product of making fertilizer.
Posted on 10/14/14 at 4:14 pm to redbullwings
It's phosphogypsum not fluoro, quoted the wrong person. It's the PCS byproduct.
Posted on 10/14/14 at 4:52 pm to Scrowe
PCS product, it cant be sold because of the radioactivity , yet there are guys who work on that stack every day.................
