How do you handle a long hallway?

Do you look at the ground, pretend to do something on your phone, or just stare people down?
I stare people down, and it's funny to watch the other person awkwardly try to avoid eye contact. It gets really crazy when they stare you down too.
Also, you have to decide what is the proper distance to initiate the salutation, if any at all.
Man, frick hallways.

Hallways scare me. I'm happy when other people are there because they're less freaky. We have one in our house that I practically run down when I'm up late at night alone.

Why not just casually look past people? I've read social experiment articles that say they will be more likely to get out of your way if you do this.

Stare
Slight nod of acknowledgement when in "conversation" range.

Eye contact at 20 paces
Expose junk at 10 paces
Inappropriate rubbing at arm's length

If it's a woman I try to not stare directly at her breast.

Hahahaha YES!
I was thinking about this the other week..."Surely this happens to people other than myself, wonder when this makes the OT Lounge?"
And, if eye contact is made too early (30+ paces), give the head nod and then awkwardly look past them until you pass them.
Hopefully get close enough to make a verbal salutation without having to significantly raise your voice...15 paces?

Yes indeed

What in the actual frick?
You people are so socially inept that a hallway scares you?

No, the awkwardness with practically staring at a person that's 100 ft away down a long skinny hallway.
It's too far away to start a convo. You could wave to be polite, but then you're just looking at them for however long after said wave.
Has Seinfeld not covered this? Surely he has...

I've actually noticed I have a slight problem with eye contact in general. In those situations, I tend to look away or down when someone looks at me. And then when I'm in a meeting or something , I think I make too much eye contact, like I'm trying to hypnotize somebody. Eye contact is a very weird thing in general.
